take leaf out of a carp fishers rigs and use a modified version of a bolt rig (i.e have a smll hook in front of a large one like a pennall)bait the small hook up to the large, then cast out, hopefully a small whiting or pout will take the small hook leaving the larger one exposed.you then have a perfect livebait not damaged or stuned by casting.
warning............
i always fish two rods when fishing this way as you could hook the livebait but no larger fish comes across it.

eh, as a match carp angler i would just like to add that your wrong in stating this is called a bolt rig, a bolt rig is a rig where the lead is fixed(wont slide) so the fish hooks itself against the weight.
Your thinking of a hair rig where there is the hook which the fish hooks itself with, and a small item used to attach the bait(never actually another hook for fish safety reasosn)

sorry but i had to clear that up, using this pennel effect it works very well for larger predatory fish such as cod as well as conger to name a couple happy
