Hi all, new member, been using site abit for info but didn't register til now.
I am purely a food fisherman, ie I keep almost everything I catch, if it's edible and big enough.
During the last few months, fishing is pretty poor here, but not overly dull either.
Haven't caught anything around Roysth or N. Queensferry, although lately with the PM at home in NQ, the police won't let you near the place.
In Aberdour Aug - Oct we were catching Mackeral .5-1.5 lbs off Silver Sands Lighthouses. Taking maybe 15 to 20 off shoreline, seen boats coming in with 30-50, but not massive amounts. Generally mackeral has been viewed as poor this year, blame is laid on dutch and spanish boats and dolphin.
Burntisland to Kinghorn Oct - Nov mainly fishing Burntisland Pier, Seawall and Bay Marks.
Off peir, not alot really, mostly codling, little wrasse a few mackeral late Oct.
Off Seawall, casting 5-10m inside of first crab pot line (careful of snagging) mostly taking Wrasse, had a few at 2+ lbs mostly little ones. Seen a few cod lately in November, 2-3lbs+ People here use mussle or lug to take them. Mussle they freeze and thaw, freeze and thaw etc, to get it smelly... and it does, you can smell thier baits 200yrds away! But it is doing the trick.
Off the point I've had a few seatrout on lug oddly, mostly flounders. The trout are 1lb on avg. Flounders around the same. They're getting quite fat now, but now really very big.. getting ready for the spawn i guess.
Burntisland bay, Flounders again, bigger ones, had a few 3lb's or so. feeds the whole family those do.
Pettycur - Mostly wrasse, codling, had a conger about 8 lbs end of oct, taken on ragworm of all things. Again usually flounder as it's mostly sand.
Kinghorn to Kirkcaldy, not really had chance to look there, but some have told me they're getting cod off the shore upto avg 2-3 lbs.
I almost exclusively use Lugworm and Ragworm. Sometimes mussels if I can be bothered walking out far enough to collect the decent sized ones. Or sometimes razorfish.
Anyone looking for Lug or Rag, best areas I've found are Burntisland directly out from the swimming pool, some good sized worms near and in the newer man maid sections of sand, can get clumps of 5-6 in a single fork, get bigger ragworms on low tides near the point, but the mud is like clay there, hard work, but good worms. Razor, usually taken in the bay at low tides at edge of water, the orients are taking alot tho, destroying the stock rapidly. They walk the shore in packs of 12 or so taking hundreds away each day of low tides. 1.1m or so.
Anyone else fishing around here? I'm looking for good marks for flounder, bass etc.
Only sure Bass location I've found is near Pettycur bay, if you walk along beach, from carpark, towards burntisland, past the rocks sticking out under the caravan park, from end of rocks out to the rocky island you will see a sand spar, goes out for about 700 yrds at low tide, from the rocks to end of spar, i've taken several 1-2 lb bass, all on lug. They don't seem to like ragworm at all, although everything else does. At low tides, on the ebb, fishing out from this spar is nice for decent sized flounder as well. Although the best is uptiding. But thats alot of moving and it's alot of walking.
Need to be careful as well on the low/highs as the speed of the incoming tide over the shallow sands is something to keep an eye on, the sand turns to sludge rapidly when aquified, making walking difficult and slow.
I'm usually out wearing a big red "giant size" flotation suit, so if you see me, come chat. Always good to talk. My mate is usually the smaller dude in camoflage gortex, never liked that stuff myself. And keep an eye on the Kite Surfers near pettycur and the skidoos in burntisland bay. They tend to ignore your lines, although, they're always very apologetic when they realise what they've done. But it pays to be observant fishing near them. |

Update - Fishing off shore, high tide to low and back towards high again, 7am to about 18.30.
Location - Kinghorn Harbour and south towards Pettycur.
Absolutely sod all caught all day. In evening, 4 flounder, no bigger than about 10oz and a dozen tiny wrasse. However, we're going to try a more specific point directly off headland just down from the harbour which we missed, locals say it's alot deeper at low tide there. Will keep post updated.
We were fishing 3 rods, 2 bcasters and 1 bass rod.
Bait - Fresh Ragworm, Lug and some of tescos finest mackeral.
Was some talk of a group of locals from kirkcaldy fishing week last sunday, 29th nov, caught in 6 hours, between 12 of them, over 40 fish. One guy caught 23 flounder, 3 of which were over 2lb. The rest of the fish were no recorded or mentioned, we told the group was organised online, but seeing no post here... Anyone know anything? Would be nice to know exactly what baits/hooks/location they were in. As the areas we tried aparently were completely empty. Or we're just not good fishermen. |
