hello everyone , ive not been fishing long and ive got 3 fixed reels and there are the only ones i can use as ive tryed to use a mates multi and all i did was waste all his line nesting it up, i only used it twice but after evry cast i had to cut the line to bits and put new line on , how do i use one and stop it nesting ive asked my mate and he says he hasnt even used it coz he also nests it so he uses a fixed on too.

OK, ask yourself this question - why do I want to use a multiplier? If the answer is in order to cast over 140 yds or to do some tournament casting fine - there are plenty of instructions on web sites and in books which will tell you to get your timing right and stop the reel just before the sinker hits the water then do some practice starting with fairly short casts to begin with. However, if you don't want to bother stick with a fixed spool. Most modern decent fixed spools will cast over 100 yds no problem and have a much better retrieve rate than the average multiplier.

I had the same problem when I started using multipliers specifically Abu 6500's. In those days with the type of rods and more importantly the fixed spool reels available, multipliers were the only way to go.
As eccles said fixed spool reels have improved and teamed up with long (14-16') rods they are more than adequate for fishing.
If you still want to fish with a multiplier then I can give you a few hints that compliments eccles advice.
For non mag reels.
With all new reels clean the spool bearings in lighter fluid. let them dry on kitchen paper and add a small drop of heavy oil, I use gearbox oil, on to each bearing. Let it soak through and re-assemble the reel. Remember to replace the brake blocks that inevitably fallout when you dismantle the reel. This should make the reel more manageable.
With mag reels, just do as eccles advised and practise, starting with the mag on nearly full and loosening it as your confidence and skill improves.
In my experience Abu reels are faster than a 7ht. I can cast a 7ht out of the box without changing the oil but if you want to be on the safe side put new oil in the bearings. Alternatively, you can buy a mag.
Hope this helps,
Mac

Buy a good one and then get some lessons off a casting instructor. The lessons are normally free and it is not all about swinging lead and tournament fields, nor will you find yourself being belittled as a beginer.

Once you've mastered one of the modern multipliers you will never go back to the mangle as a first choice (and a fixed spool will feel just a like a mangle). The modern multipliers are leaps and bounds ahead of the things I learnt on in the distant past and are easy to use by comparison but you do need to learn how to use and service one properly to get the best out of them, as you do any reel, and a casting instructor can teach you enough in an hour to get you well on the way.

Hi all i had the same problem when i started to use my abu 6500ct i got it out the box filled it to the brim with line and then used it and ended up cutting most the line off because of a birdnest. Then i was told by another fisherman that to learn to use the real it is best use line of between 12-15lb which is quite thin and only put 100 yards of line on the real this does not fill it up much so the spool has to spin a lot faster to feed of the line in a cast to keep up with the lead and does not seem to spin fast enough to over run the line. This worked for me and i slowly added more line as i got used to casting the real. You still need to stop the real as the weight hits the water but you stop getting a birdnest during the cast.

more and more anglers are now turning to fixed spool now,as the development of them has improved considerably over the years, with a bit of practice and a good reel its not too difficult to keep up with a multi, well for the average angler anyway.

so ask yourself newbee "do i need a multi?"

but its your choice and if you want to go along those lines then do so,and get someone to show you the ropes, good luck with whatever you choose fella

this is only my personal opinion

The correct way to set up a multiplier i as follows. Hold the rod in the horizontal position and allow the weight to drop to the ground if the spool overruns then you need to increase the brakes, do this until you can drop the weight without the spool overrunning.

You may need to fine tune the reel according o you casting style

Don't try to slow the reel down with your thumb as this will cause you to burn your thumb with friction

Keep your eye on the weight and as soon as it hits the water stop the reel dead rather than slowing it down.
Best of luck
