I wanted to try for some late Wrasse, so Itook a pushnet to my local beach and spent half an hour collecting prawns, I caught about forty small flatfish as bycatch. I took a few photos of the flatties as I was not 100% sure what they were, I thought they were probably Flounder. [img] [img]
I was told later that they were indeed tiny Flounder.
I dug a few worms just in case and then headed off for a twenty minute drive to my closest wrasse mark.
I set up a light float rod and baited with the prawn. Within minutes of the bait hitting the water it dissapeared but it wasnt the Wrasse I disired but a scrappy little pollack. This went on for some time. any bait I tried was taken by the hingry pollack. In the end I badly hooked a fish of about 8" there was no chance of it going back so I banged him on the head and mounted him on a 7/0 wire trace and launched the bait towards Galway.
I set the ratchet on the 525 and had a go with some feathers on another rod. The mackerel came in steadily in one and twos. All small, the size of a big Joey exept one fish which was close to 2lb and easily the biggest mackerel I have ever seen. The ratchet on the 525 started to click so I picked up the rod and sruck on the next pull. As so many times before the trace was snagged solid and I pulled for the break.
I then tried a mackerel flapper which produce a shy bite which turned out to be a small Bullhuss[img] The next hour was constant small knocks on the baits which were the small Pollack which had plagued me earlier.
The next day I headed off for a mark I had been told about by some old lads I fish with. Its about 40 minutes walk from the road and as such is rarely fished.
I started off spinning a sandeel imitation which gave me a pollack of about 2lb on the second cast. The water was very clear and it was great to watch the pollack coming out of the Kelp forest and chase the lure. I saw one good fish that looked well over 5lb turn away at the last minute. I had a lot of plucks at the lure and hooked and lost another two fish. I think a smaller eel may have encouraged more takes but I wanted to try the bait rods.
Using half mackerel baits gave me instant intrest, the first bite being a strap conger of about three feet long, the bait was way too big for it and he wasnt hooked but didnt want to give up his mackerel prize. He let go as I was hauling him up the rocks. A good result for both of us! Two bull huss took the next two baits, the second one which was the larger put up a real good scrap as I pulled him from the kelp.
Shortly after that I ran out of bait and headed home.
