IF I had another boat, (present 13ft one is for sale) lets say 16ft. What is the least Hp outboard I can use for an aux engine. I was hoping to use a 4 stroke Tohatsu.
Ps : 35yrs fly fishing, now gripped by the sea fishing just a year ago. It's all new to me. including all this forum stuff

Just back from kirkcaldy this afternoon, the forth looked very choppy, not that I would have went out in it. Just wondering.... Is 4 hp enough ? would it be strong enough to get me back into the docks if the weather turn nasty ?

well as said above 2hp pushed my 18ft(not 16ft as written) fletcher which was a heavy boat and in choppy seas it was slow(which you`d want anyway) but got me there without trouble and i also have a 4hp on my 21 footer which weighs over a tonne and half so yes a 4hp is fine on a 16ft

a man rowing would be lucky to develop half a horsepower, yet plenty of 16' boats are rowed about....and 8 or so hardy brave types used to row lifeboats out in raging seas....yes 4hp should do it !
