Finished work in Petersfield at 4 and pegged it out the door. Headed to the sea at a rate of knots, all pun intended, to get some fishing in before the sea went too far out.
Got started about 4:30 and was in an area I wasn't to sure about footing so never went much beyond the knees, even though the water was crystal clear. As it turns out it was pretty good footing all round.
Was getting nothing for about an hour and slowly following the tide out to keep reasonable depth. Then I started to notice what looked like noses popping up around the fly, but still nothing. Then I cast and scared a fish as the fly line landed above it, scared the crap out of me too.
As I wasn't getting anything still, I move about 200 yards along the waters edge and was standing knee deep and the water went mental, fish flying everywhere. I headed towards it and it stopped just out of my casting range. Then it started again about 20ft further out so I moved again, then again and it all stopped.
I figured I had missed everything and cast into the weedy area and BANG, the rod bent nicely and I had a bloomin' fish on the end FINALLY.
As it turns out it was the only bite of the day and I hit it, I was grinning when I pulled it in. Now whilst not huge, having only caught a few tiny one’s, and most of those with bassfly on my first ever trip, I was dead happy. It was a 30cm bass. The only task then was to get a picture quickly before returning it to the briny to get bigger for next time.
Bassfly might recognise the fly

I live near Stonehaven south of Aberdeen. The east coast here has few protected waters. Also, I'm from Texas so fishing the sea here is quite different from Galveston Bay. My question...for bass, can you fish for them in the surf? At Stonehaven Bay, there's a bunch of rocks about 150 meters seaward of the high tide line. I'm thinking of giving it a go at high tide and fish between the beach and these rocks. Water should be 2 or 3 meters deep, sandy bottom with some rocks and boulders with kelp. Is this typical bass habitat? Can be fished with fly?
Thanks |

Id say fish it,try all types of fly but i think a darker one would be a bit better in the surf.Maybe on a sink tip or Intermediate line.
Good luck

Simon, thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll give it a try when I can out when the tides are right. Will probably give it a try on the fly and with spinning and top water plugs to see if I can locate the fish. Any suggestions on fly patterns. I have bunch of patterns for Texas Gulf of Mexico bays...maybe they'll work here too.
Thanks,
Tim |
