Hi Bliss,

We've tried several different rigs in different places but we seem to be settling on 3 hook, pennell pulley, and running ledger of late.

If we're not sure whats about and havn't any prior local knowledge, we'll chuck in a couple of 3 hooks at different distances with a mix of baits to see whats about. We may fish that combination right through or we might change over if we're getting bites. The pennell pulleys have worked really well on cod and bass and we seem to miss less fish with them as the set up means that the fish effectively strike into themselves lessening the human error part of the equation. The weight of the fish also pulls up the lead on the retrieve which means less chance of accidental damage to the fish and less chance of snagging your lead on the bottom.

I use the running ledger for flatties. Long trace, lots of beads and some split shot to hold the hook down. I'd never caught a flattie until I started using this rig. First time, first cast and I got a small sole within minutes.

Leads are more difficult. We only use grip leads as a lot of the fishing marks we go to have a strong tidal movement. The stronger the tide, the bigger the lead. At Orford we were using 7oz brakaway impacts. Other places we might use a 5 or 6 but don't forget, it's also governed by the casting range of your rod.

Hope that helps a little. We've been doing it since last christmas and have only just started catching more regularly. Biggest pieces of kit you need are patience and perseverance!

Cheers
