Hi, I am off up to Portmahomack in a week and have never fished before. I have bought a simple sea fishing kit and read a couple of books (which is why i have joined this forum...so many questions to ask!)....so if you see a baldy middle aged bloke who looks like he hasn't got a clue what he is doing, that will be me. I am planning on fishing (or attempting to) at Portmahomack pier, Tarbat Ness by the lighthouse and maybe Balintore area. |

I,ve always found that freelined limpets ,( out of shell ) are a demon bait up Scotland, especially in the kelp beds.
Usually fish them on size 4 - 1/0 hooks but a mate reckons black or yellow tail lug are better specially on sandy beaches.
hope ths helps ,

Day 3 and not a single fish.
Day 1: I used cockles and muscles as bait at a place called the Ault between Inver and Portmahomack. It is a sandy fast flowing inlet. They were too soft and fell off when I cast so I used a spinner. The tide was probably too far in by then anyway.
Day2: Off Tarbet Ness lighthouse. Very rocky outcrop. Tried a spinner and got nothing then saw two guys futher up catching codling on ledgers but they were casting way beyond anything I could reach even though they kindly gave me some lugworm to try. But at least there were fish there. I caught several rocks and boulders of varying sizes but let them go to conserve the environment.
Day3: Lugworm at the Ault on an incoming tide using a ledger. Nothing. I don't even know if there were fish to be had.
I spoke to locals relatives and they said fishing off Portmahomack pier is pointless as it doesn't get deep enough.
My enthusiasm for fishing is waining quickly. |
