my second question!
when i fish i do not fish for anything inpaticular (probably my mistake) and use a home made rig comprising of 2 hooks on snoods of approx 1 and a half foot baited with mackerel tied on, i am using a hook size of 3/0 and a 6oz spiked weight of chesil dorset.
firstly am i using the right type of rig and secondly is the bait that i am using gunna get me a fish?
i have had the odd doggey but not much luck recently
is it best to cast as far as poss or concentrate closer considering that the water is deep |

Hi petersclan,
We have been using pennell pulley rigs with a range of hook sizes on the advice of our tackle shop guru. He fishes with nothing else. First time out with them at Orford (see post in east coast forum) we hardly missed any bites as the fish were doing the striking themselves. Compared with getting bites and missing on the strike, I may well stick to this kind of rig myself and just use something different for flatties.
As regards distance, that is something that only local knowledge will tell you. At Orford if you cast over forty yards you will miss the codling, over twenty and you'll miss the odd stray bass. At Holland on sea, 25 yards will find sole and at 70 yards in the summer you'll get school bass. The best people to ask are the ones down there fishing it or the guys in your local tackle shop. We also keep a basic log on an xl spreadsheet which tells us what we caught, where, with what bait, what time, what time of year, what the weather was like and how far. By doing this, year on year we hope to build up a picture for ourselves of whats what, which should be tailored to the way we fish rather than the way someone else does.
Hope that helps. |

thanks,
I have made a log on xl for every fishing trip, my wife thought i was mad for doing this!!!!! but thought it would help next year. as for the rig that i am using i think i am fairly happy with it and it has caught us good fish. I do need to get a grip on casting distances i think and maybe try using some ragworm or even try multi baiting and see if it makes a difference.
ill give it a shot next time and see if we catch anything
cheers |

We tend to use a lot of lug round here. Bait cocktails can work well as does tipping off lug with rag, mackeral or squid. |
