Hi all,
Tony here, new to the forum, first post.
I live in Deal and fish from the beach most of the time and occaisionally try the local pier.
My last outing (yesterday) drew a total blank. I was fishing the beach at Walmer. Never tried here before but have often seen people heading over that way with their gear so figured it might be worth a try. I also used a bait I havn't tried before, blueys, and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on them. They are very oily and must have a heavy and lasting scent but did not catch a thing. No-one else seemed to be catching either so maybe it was just a slow day. If anyone knows the area and has any tips - let me know! Going out again tomorrow night and hoping for a bit more luck... |

Hi Tony, welcome to the site, I've fished with Blueys quite a few times and never caught anything with them, but don't let that put you off. I just buy macky again now, at least i catch with it. Cheers...Mick |

Thanks all for the warm welcome.
Seems blueys are getting the thumbs down all round! Might give them a second try tonight but will be taking lug as backup. Congrats to Sue on the hound - very nice! |

Hi Tony
The beach can be a bit difficult to catch fish this time of year. However, if you wait for darkness you will find it a different ball game. Try using smaller cuts of blueys and scale down your hook sizes, it might make a difference. |

| Thanks for the advice. Will put it to use tonight. What size of hook would you recommend? I am going to take two rods, one loaded with a pennel rig (at the moment the hooks on there are 1/0) and the other with a two hook flapper perhaps with slightly smaller hooks? The hot weather seems to make the fishing slow during the day, unless the mackerel are about. On that note, has anyone been catching mackerel round these parts? Went on Deal pier last week and the conditions were ideal - the water was clear and the temperature was up but nobody caught one all day. The odd herring was caught at 'the well' but other than this is was quiet. |

| Your rigs are ok, however, scale down to size 2 or even 4s on your two hook flapper, there might be a chance of a sole or eel on lug. Catching fish at the moment is a bonus. The north-east wind has put a bit of colour in the water so there will be no chance of mackerel. For the sake of £2, a 1lb box of squid from the tackle shop is always a good bait to have as well. Good luck! |

| As you’re a local it’s always worth a look on the www.dealanglingclub1919.co.uk website (on the forum under beach fishing) for an idea of what has been caught, and the www.dealpier.com site for updates on the pier. Saying that, remember, there are no two-days alike with angling! |

Hope your next trip proves more productive Ducker - I have put off the trip I had planned tonight (with the lightning and driving rain I thought it best to stay in and put kettle on!) Will have one eye on the weather tomorrow and get out there given half the chance.
Thanks for the tips celocant, will scale down the hooks as suggested. I have used squid with success from the beaches in the past - thin strips of it work well (the dogfish seem to like it anyway). Hoping to be able to put all this new knowledge to the test soon! |
