Hi
haven't fished Orford before, but was wondering:
1. What's it fishing like at the mo?
2. Is the only way there via ferry? (where from? how much? what times?)
3. Any particular spots to avoid or aim for at Orford?
Thanks |

Hi Gingerangler.
1. Apparantly quite good.
2. Yes. £6.00 to the Crouch and £8.00 to the narrows.
3. Don't know, we're going in two weeks to find out! |

DUNC,
How much bait are you reckoning on for the night- I was thinking 100 lug- 1/2 lb rag? and plenty of squid- it's a fair old session from 4pm- 8 am the next day plus don't forget the clocks go back so we get an extra hour of fishing in- not sure if that would be enough - certainly dont want to run out and if the crabs start with their antics we could be re-baiting more than usual.

What part of Orford is known as Orford Crouch?
and
Where do you get the ferry from? In Orford town itself? Do you have to pre-book? |

Ginger,
Ferry from Orford. The Crouch (according to ordnance survey) is about halfway down the island.
Stuart,
I reckon on a pack per hour if I'm using two rods with a three hook on each and I've got no other bait. I figure, if the ferry leaves at 4, we'll get there in say 20 mins. Walk to where we're going, get set up,say 40 minutes. That would get a rod in the water about 5. Figure on pack up and walk back after a long night, say an hour which leaves 14 hours. We get about 25 lug per pack usually (depends who packs them!) and I would reckon on changing them every 15 minutes if the tides as strong as they say. Rag I would reckon on a pack every two hours if I'm careful and don't put whole worms on.
I'll also take some mack strips in bait oil and a pack of calamari for a bit of variety to bulk everything out.
So with all that said, because I'm taking other bait, I reckon 10 paks lug (approx 250), 5 packs rag + two mack stripped and a box of squid.
Does that help, 'cos reading it back, I'm not sure it makes sense but I can't be a***d to re-type it! |

Sorry Ginger,
Yes you have to pre-book. Basildon-mick posted the number on another post.
The better number is the landline: 01394 450169
Mobile: 07900 230579. |

Phew- I had to re-read it a few times and check my maths but I reckon I get the message- I need more than I was planning to get.
I'm prob gonna try and fish with Pennels with whole calamari for cod - so might not need so many worms but better to be safe than sorry-
Cheers

Yes, it's a lot of bait! I'm probably going to start with the three hook on one rod with the fishy equivalent of canapes to see if anything seems to work better. The other rod, I was going to try with a penell pulley rig and maybe make some wraps of lug, rag and squid to see what comes up. You do realise that as the two biggest blankers in Essex, we're inviting trouble by fishing together!
What hook size are you going for on the penell? |

Oh yes- especially as I'm catching up with you after I blanked again at East Lane on Saturday- couldn't help but shed a tear as the bloke 50 yds to my right pulled in a 40cm bass with his first cast at the spot I usually fish from but in my infinite wisdom when I got there thought "I'll just try 50 yds further up the beach this time..."
I'll probably be using a 2/0 or 3/0 on the clipped down pennel rigs and a size 1 hook for closer in stuff using a flapper rig-
Lookng forward to it mate.

I reckon (and bear in mind that I'm no expert) that we'll have a good crack if nothing else. I'm just waiting now for my mate to see if he can book off the weekend 'cos he's desperate to go (don't worry, he's only caught marginally more fish than us) and then I'll book the ferry. I'll ring beginning of next week with the details. |
