I have been thinking about getting a new reel, so far it is a toss-up between a slosh 30 and an abu 7000, any ideas anyone, price is an issue, and i like lots of line capacity hence the bigger sized reels. TL.

A good Abu 7,000 can be obtained relatively cheaply. These reels have stood the test of time and have a fantastic history or reliability.
I actualy use the new 7,500s as like you Im a big reel fan.

I have seen certain abu's for about £50,is there any models I should avoid? and I would like to take the level-wind off,is it easy on them.

Abu reels have a good reputation for reliabiliy. Avoid grey imports. look for the ones stamped made in sweden.
There are conversion kits available to take off the level wind, but I would refrain from taking the levelwind bar out without replacing it with the conversion bar as it will seriously weaken the reel and will alow dirt, sand and other crap into it.
The amount of distance gained by removing the levelwind in my opinion does not warrant the expense.

As far as the levelwind is concerned, surely you can buy one without?? |
