I would like to buy a couple of reels (probably multipliers but not necessarily) to match with 8 and 12 lb rods as I would like to fish as light as possible. Normally I use ABU7000 series reels but would like something smaller to load up with 8 - 15lb main line. I have had a look around the tackle shop websites but most of the smaller reels seem to be designed for shore/lure fishing rather than for boat work where there is always the possibility of a larger fish.

Any advice appreciated.

I personally would not step down from the 7,000 series as this is now classed as a light boat reel.

I would however consider the Okuma magntix 30 but without the levelwind, this rell is half the price of the 7,000

I have used 3 Shimano 1000ld Charter lever drag reels for uptiding and light boat class fishing. They are still giving first class service after use for over 12 years. The great benefit for light line fishing is the super smooth lever drag system. No other reel comes close for light line boat fishing.

Thanks for the advice. On balance so far I think I will stick to the ABU 7000s and get some spare spools from Pure Fishing and fill em up with different line.

I want to use the light gear in the Summer when I will be after the Black Bream off the East Devon coast. These fish are OK on heavier stuff but a 3-4lb fish on light gear should be good sport.

I have not given up on the pier and will be down there on Saturday (and possibly the 2 Saturdays after that) - probably fish from around 1pm to 6pm. If you see someone before that practising casting on the beach that will be me - if you're there say hello. Do you know if the Sole have arrived yet and if so where is the best spot to target them? - I have been told that just to the left of pier during the slack water at high tide 30-40 yards out from the wall is a good place (Bass too). Night much better than day.
