Been on here a few weeks now, and esp reading about different baits & stuff being used.
Some of you say "Smellier the Better", some of you say "Using Fresh or Frozen xxxxx"
So whats best for what fish?
Ie smelly peeler crab for Flounder (I may be wrong on that - just an example)
Just that I find with smelly limpet, my stomach starts trying to break the world hurling record

You think limpit's bad? You want to try black lug when its on the turn. It stinks to start with but gets significantly worse with age-especially on a hot day with no cool box!
I suppose there is some merit in the argument about smell. If fish are attracted by the scent of the bait, then surely a smellier bait would work better. We add acouple of philes of fish oil to our mackeral strips and it's certainly paid divvies for my mucca (I only ever seem to fish dry holes).
The question is, is there a limit? Do fish care how on the turn a bait is? If they do, what is the limit;a day old, two days? Anyone out there with the answers? |

Harbour rag is a gut wrencher too - esp if it has died and turned to puss
Surely after a certain stage of "smellyness", the fish are revolted, and all you have is crab bait? |

mmmmnn....where to start.
imho......
worms;- ragworm... best when live, will still work if freshly dead but will turn to mush pretty quick.
lug worm , blow lug pretty much as above .
blacks/yellowtails and large commons? live or frozen, gut em b4 freezing, blacks seem to work better if they've been thawed and re froze untill they become sticky, dunno about yellows n commons though.
fish;- mackerell, best fresh, freeze once only.
sandeel, i've not used live or fresh, seems to be best when thawed and refrozen once only, turns to mush the 2nd time though i've caught a bass with them dripping off the hook.
herring, handles refreezing better than mackerel but i 've never had much success with it down here, fresh or froze .
shelfish;- i've not used them much but i'm told , ok fresh ,better if stale , ok to freeze and refreeze .
crab , pealer,(includeing hermits) live is best, frozen ok, don't refreeze. if they've gone black and or smell foul they're little good .
i've still more to learn about lug worms though , i've not been useing them for long. |

If nothing else is happening , try the oldest smelliest Mackeral you can find. Bind it onto a three hook flapper. This can result in 3 dogs at a time. They love it......
Is there not a forum totaly dedacated to Dog fish fishing yet. I mean , its a highly skilled area.
They even took fresh peeler of mine last week. Got a 7lb Smoth though, not on crap, Calamari. No reason in it all.
