Mullet Fishing ?

I'd like to give mullet fishing a go this year but havent got a clue where to start. are there any good places in Pembrokeshire to try? when is the best time to go? ive got a 7ft spinning rod and small fixed spool reel, is this any good for float fishing?
any advice is welcome

pembroke docks are good for mullet rod/reel combo are good fella they are a annoying fish to catch just take some fresh bread and either rag or lug chopped into small bits

cheers shorty m8. where abouts in the dock? i live in pembroke dock just round the corner from hobbs point, is it any good down there?. what kind of conditions are best to try?

Mullet.....

Harbour rag a good choice, bread flake as is floating for carp, light rod aswell, spinning rod is fine, bass rod, beach caster too much.

Cleddau around Milford, Hobbs Point, and milford docks good starting points. Neyland marina aswell. Mullet not quite arrived as yet, soon though.

I read in a book once that small pieces of...spagetti work well, not al dente, but a bit tougher, maggots & also a fluffy white dry fly on a fly rod.

Great fight if u do get one, remember the moths are soft, so care needed.

i once hooked one off hobbs, more by accident, hooked straight through top lip, took off like a train, great fight - not bad eating either - all 6lb of it.

Another option is harbour rag, off somewhere like Saundersfoot, tenby (harbour area) or amroth for a golden grey in the surf - as good a fight as bassbut in 2 feet of water.

what size hooks will i need, ive got a couple of small coarse hooks (no idea what size they came with my daughter's junior spinning rod) theyre about 10mm in size, would these be any good?
Jim/Shorty: when do they usually come into the Cleddau and what conditions are best?

what kind of size do mullet grow to? I've seen some fish in Milford Marina just by Pheonix Bowl which looked like they were scouring for food near the surface but they looked pretty big, would they be mullet?

Yep, they are mullet. Very powerful fighters....IF you are lucky to hook one.

Hooks, ive used size 4s, i caught one once on a size 2/0, something or other, fine competition hook straight through the nose...took off like a train....

I dont go mullet fishing as much as i could do, but some friends say, small but not too small, a big Carp hook, in fact a hair rig on a 4-8 would do fine.

Standard river float tackle, wagglers (if u know what they are??), light lines, they are very cautious fish...the rest is up to luck tbh...

a group of us fished swansea marina last night, got frustrated as hell as they would look like they about to take it then divert last minute as if spooked, but then struck into a nice 4lb er lovely fight on fly rod with 8lb line on bread

im hoping to have a go at catching my 1st mullet tomorrow if the weather is good. ive got a few places in mind. ill take my spinning rod, small fixed spool, 8lb line and a selection of floats.
ill keep you posted on how i get on

Not sure, there were permits being sold, but no one actually infiorces them anyway.

I see people fishing occassionally, but from the slipway opposite the bowl, and more towards the gates.

The pontoons are out of bounds, understandably, however, the baest thing to do is try it..or ask the Miford Dock Company..

I used to specialise in Mullet fishing a long time ago.
As a general rule, I say that you don't normally catch the fish you see.
If the fish are on the surface, drop your bread bait down to the bottom, then lift it up 6 inches. The bites will be very quick, so be ready to strike quickly.
Another method is to use a Mepps type spinner, put some weight in front of it for casting, then bait the treble hook with a tiny piece of ragworm. Cast and retrieve at a steady rate.
This method usually sorts out the bigger fish, occasionally up to the 7lb range. My average size with this method is around 3lb per fish.

i never thought of using a spinner will have to give it a go.
i was planning on using float tactics but will try anything.
how would i get the bread to the bottom? i was thinking of adding a few shots to the line to help it sink slowly so not to spook the fish (but if theres a better way im open to suggestions) confused

I used to fish with a bullet lead about 14" above the hook.
Drop this to the bottom then gauge the lift from the bottom so the bait is about 6" from the sea bed.
It works, but you have to be very quick when they bite.
