Got my birthday coming up soon and I am angling for a new reel as my trusty tld15 is more than showing its age.
Since the better half is (hopefully) paying for it and she has been known to lurk around these pages, I need advice on 'reasonable' priced reels to replace my shimano. Did mention the shimano calcutta but when I mumbled the price tag I got the reply ' you've got to be (censored) joking'. Being mature and having learned the hard way, young anglers take note, I refrained from mentioning the cost of hairdressers, make-up etc as I didn't want to end up having to appear grateful for a bakelite framed Penn seaboy.
Not that I have anything against Penn reels and believe that the modern ones are quite good. I have also read in the angling press that Daiwa have a new range of reels that appear up to the job. I am a bit dubious about magazine articles praising tackle as the mags depend on advertising from the major tackle dealers. So if anyone can give me info and advice on the reels they have used or still use it will be much appreciated.

The reel that I would sugest is the Okuma Magnetix 30 but the one without the level wind.
Its large enough to cope with skate or tope and is brilliant for uptiding due to the mag braking system and has a decent handle to crank up the conger ect.
I have 3 of them

Thanks Keith, never thought about Okuma reels I've just tended to stick to Shimano for the boat and Daiwa and Abu from the shore. I will check out my local tackle shop in Gala and if Mick doesn't have any I will do some surfing and see if I can find them.
Unfortunately the local skippers only fish on the drift so uptiding isn't an option around our coast, which is a shame as the water is relatively shallow and the potential is huge. In saying that having a dual purpose reel that can up and down tide fish is a brilliant option to have.

Cheers Dave,
I am seriously considering buying a magnetix for a couple of reasons. Firstly, due to the reccomendations of yourself and Keith and secondly my faith in Shimano reels has been dented a bit.
I was doing a bit of research as i have not bought a new reel for years and i came across a review for the Shimano Torium on planetseafishing.com. Like this site the reviews are done by anglers and not journalists and I would reccomend reading the review on the torium, particularly the technical section. I wouldn't pay £350 for a reel but if I did I would want it to have water and salt proof innards!
So its off to my local tackle shop tomorrow to see if Mick is feeling generous with his okuma reels.

Hi Keith,
Do you still play the same lottery numbers?
Seriously i know that Albacores are the Rolls Royce of reels and if my numbers came up I would buy them. Perhaps not the 80 or 50 as my days of common skate fishing are over but a pair of 30's would be nice.
I did show the mrs your offer and she refered to my previous post where I said I wouldn't pay £340 for a reel. I pointed out to her that 'I' wouldn't pay that but I wasn't buying the reel. She just laughed so I guess I'll be playing the lottery again this week.
Regards,
mac |

Would it be possible to give your tld15 a good service? Pity to ditch a good reel like that. I bought a Fox Oceanmaster on ebay for £25, there appear to be plenty of new ones on there. I think that they were part of Fox's first foray into sea fishing, probably a rebranded reel from another manufacturer, and but all of their coarse tackle is good stuff. |

Hi Chris,
I did consider getting the tld serviced but with the amount of new parts needed plus the postage to the service centre It is going to be cheaper to buy a reasonably priced new one. In saying that I am not going to part with it as it has reeled in a lot of fish for me and I wouldn't bin it.
Thanks for the heads up on the Fox reels they are a company i never thought about for seafishing gear. Will take a look at their stuff.

Just thought i would let you guys know what reel I ended up with. My local tackle shop in Galashiels did not have a magnetix in stock and as there is no rep in the area anymore it may have taken a while to get one. So I enquired about a Fox boat reel that are apparently as rare as hens teeth aound here. Being patient seemed to be the only option.
Then last saturday the better half who claims to be the better angler and tells everyone so, dragged me out of bed to go to a car boot sale. I was wandering around trying to appear interested in bric a brac when I spotted an Abu 7000LD4. The reel was in mint condition and I thought a lever drag Abu at least £100 but I asked anyway. £20 siad the man. I bought it straight away and returned later to give him his hand back. This is the first time I have ever had a bargain like that that didn't turn out to be a lemon. Now I am looking for a floatation jacket before my luck runs out lol.

Well done Mac on your purchase. You can't go far wrong with Abu gear, parts are easily obtainable should you need them unlike some of thr other cheaper options.
