Hi there
>
>I'm an avid fisherman in South Africa but also take great interest in distance casting. I'm quite impressed with the distances achieved in the UK and am very interested in knowing how this is done. By this I mean that I would like to know the tackle used in the casting competition ie. length of the rod, type and make of reel, as well as the line diameter used to achieve these distances. Also of great importance for me is the technique that is used in achieving these distances. The furthest cast that I've had has been 210m which is well short of the distances being achieved. Could you please be so kind as to assist me in this regard as to where I could find information or maybe some e-mail addresses of the top casters, etc.

hi shiraz,
i do not know as to how the casting is now going in south africa, but i know that a few years back the south africans were acheiving very good distances themselves.

the length of rod varies, the majority are using 13ft, a few are using 14ft and danny moeskops uses 16ft rods. the majority of rods on the casting scene are zziplex and century, imax have got some new rods that are being used to good effect by the welsh casters.

the reels are mainly abu. the older mag 2 +3's and ultramag 2 + 3's and the 5500 and 6500 series. i have seen a few 6600 starting to be used.

line diametres used are as follows:-
125 gram lead-------0.28mm
150 gram lead-------0.31mm
175 gram lead-------0.35mm

pendulum style is the widely used style with some casters going for the high lead, and some casters opting for a lower lead. the lower lead means that the rod comes round a lot flatter.

a 210 metre cast is a very respectable cast in any ones book.

hope this helps you out a little.

if you go to the UKSF website you might be able to get further contacts from them.
