I usually fish with Black at my neck of the woods but have used sandeel (usually frozen). Every time i cast, the sandeeljust leaves the line, some casts have been ok. So, what method do you use to keep your sandeel on? Any help appreciated

Hi, cheers, i do have that stuff, i don't know if my supplier supplies poor bait, but another problem is the sandeel goes mushy and just falls apart, also, how do you hook your sandeel?

Thing is with sandeel its very very important that it does not defrost
"definately do not re-freeze it"
Its very important that the Sandeel is still almost frozen before you use it and when you want to actually use one take it out and just defrost it in your hand for a few moments and at that point its ready for the hook.
just hook the Sandeel through the lower jaw and feed it around the shank to say around the eye, I would use a small bait stop to keep it from moving up the line
Cheers

i would cut the head and tail off,if using a single hook, hook it through the heck area with the hook coming out about halfway down the length of the sand eel, then tie on with bait elastic,or if using 2 hooks,1 trough the tail end and 1 through the neck end but still use bait elastic,if not chances are if you put any kind of power into your cast it will blow your eel to bits, then you have lost your bait and time to start again |

I sometimes make a loop near the shank of the hook and turn it over and then slip it over t he sandeel's neck and then pull. Its a little bit like a slip knot but with the ease of removing it. |

well, we're lucky enough down here to be able to fish with live sandeel, when its available, trick is to use a 3/0 or 1/0 dependant on your target species, feed the barb through the lower lip and then just nick the side below the gills, should hold it on well enough for a good cast, the problem with most frozen eel is that if they are not blast frozen they deteriorate very quickly, a good eind of bait elastic can solve it, but best to use good quality |
