Hi guys, with the bewildering array of tying materials available can anyone recommend a handful of materials to get me started with the most common patterns i.e sandeels and whitebait patterns.
many thanks

A basic selection to enable you to tie a number of different patterns would be:
Hooks- size 2 & 4 (Mustad 34007, C70SD or SS74 or similar)
Thread- Danvilles flat waxed (white), Danvilles Mono tying thread (clear)
Bucktail- White, chartreuse, olive
Synthetic hair- Super hair or Ultra hair olive, white
Flash- Pearl crystal flash, silver flashabou
Body material- Bill's body braid
Fritz- pearl/white
Marabou- white
Cock neck or saddle hackles- Black, white
Peacock herl
Eyes- 4mm tape eyes, 6mm tape eyes, 5/32 dumbells, silver beadchain.
Sally Hansen 'Hard as Nails' nail varnish
5 minute clear epoxy.
Armed with the above there aren't many patterns you couldn't tie. Clousers, blondes, semper fleyes, candies, ray's flies, decievers, schminnows. Obviously you can add more colours (black, orange and pink bucktail are very useful) and other size hooks and different synthetics (DNA Holofusion for instance). Strung hackles are the cheapest way to buy your feathers although you will get better quality feathers from a decent cape.

I reckon the information given by MJB merits the order of 'sticky'. |
