and have been on the march. You asked for it....
be aware I day fish unless very close to home where I sometimes fish evenings until 10 pm ish. Not really late enough for many venues.
Favourite spots:
1. Poole Entrance (the Haven). Easy parking easy access to bass spinning on hotel side (or Shell Bay). Very difficult, if not suicidal to bottom fish from hotel side into the deeps due to tide and huge tackle losses.
Got to be one of the top spots for consistent bass spinning and can get very busy. Floating works on both sides for bass and gar. I assume also macks but not caught one that way yet.
Bottom fishing from Shell Bay side is popular, as is the hike to the Training Banks. There is a stream exit nr the ferry side of shell bay and this seems a popular spot for casting into the channel for bass etc. Again this area must be fished with the strong tide in mind i.e. at times it it impossible. Don't give up on low tide from shell bay side. Fish are still caught.
Some double figure bass are caught from hotel side (probably because more anglers fish there) on live sand eel and floated baits during the evenings. There is a lot of competition from shore anglers and boat trolling.
If you walk around to the first rock groyne you will find a very good mark for wrasse to 2-3lb on ragworm baits (exclusively). Also mini species like scorpion. The 1st rock groyne juts out into the deepish leisure craft channel and can also pick up decent bass (rarely) at distance (into channel). Gets very busy.
Plus the beaches are good for school bass and flatties when in season (evenings).
2. Holes Bay Rd. Opposite the pub on the corner gets closest to the main channel. Very productive for me. Loads of school bass, top flattie spot later in the yr, top eel spot (great sport). Good access if you can park on the road, otherwise park in the pub and cross carefully the dual carriageway. Flood venue.
3. Evening Hill.
Flood venue. School bass.
4. Jerrys Point.
If you want mullet go find this mark. Short walk opposite studland.
5. Swanage Pier.
Easy pickings (annoying) wrasse, mostly small. Odd bass. Macks on feathers, lures or commonly shallow-fished float with mackeral strip.
6. Dorset Lake, Hamworthy. You can find this park nr the marine base. Easy parking for fishing the pier. Again school bass, mullet, flatties quite a productive spot usually. If you walk south to the point the beach is apparently a very good night venue for bigger bass, one of the few spots within the harbour.
Be very careful and responsible if you pick up bass in the harbour. This is a bass nursery area. Once you are beyond a line from Jerrys Point to Salterns quay you are outside. I would frown on targeting bass in the nursery but if you bottom fish for other species e.g. eel & flatties you will inevitably catch school bass. Return them carefully.
Better marks are the beaches of Southbourne, Hengistbury Head and Avon but I'm not the person to offer advice on those. I can't travel far and fish Poole mostly. |

I read in the Echo on Weds that Poole Dolphins Angling Club had a match along shell bay a few evenings ago and only two fish were caught all evening. Mind you one was an 8lb ray  |

Southbourne often fishes well. All the Purbeck marks are hammered by the gill netters. |

hi m8, i've fished a few dorset marks this year, but good results maybe a different story.
1, chesil, various venues, codling, pout, bass, doggies, bream, triggerfish, mackerel, scad, and i lost a good conger
2, double dykes @ hengistbury, turbot, just the 1.
3, avon beach, pout , whiteing, bass, dab, rockling, smallleyed ray.
this year i put in more hours on chesil but havn't fished southbourne , yet. |
