Hi all i was thinking of trying out braid and was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers. What breaking strain would you need for general shore fishing over a variety of ground,do you need a shock leader when using it,can the knots used with mono be used with braid also is it nessacary to have a purpose made shallow spool for your reel when using braid due to its low diamater and most importantly do it hold much advantage over mono?Sorry for all the questions just thought i'd try and get some info before i take the dive.
Any advice would be greatly apreciated
Cheers

hi funkel, i use 20lb spiderwire braid on one of my reels with 50lb braid as a shock leader i find the bite detection on braid is far superior to mono

Thanks for the feedback guys i suupose the best thing is to try it for my self and see i'm still not sure whether the usual knots apply i've heard it tends to slip more than mono and there seems to be mixed opinion on whether use a shockleader or not i was thinking of going for a high breaking strain to take the shock of the cast and leaving off the shockleader |

Hi funkel
On the plus side braid has fantastic bite detection, casts a country mile and is a very tough line. however braid is also tough on the fisherman and his/her fishing gear.
I've snapped rods longcasting with braid and night fishing can be tough with braid as it tends to wrap around the tip of your rod very easily.Fixed spool gear can do a number on your finger if you don't wear protection.
Using a shock leader does not hurt. Espically if your rod/blank is just avg. quality.
Wearing finger protection on fixed spool gear is a very good habit.
Don't use less than 50-65 pound test braid on multipliers.
Good luck |

Braid is ideal on a fixed spool reel for all the reasons mentioned above. On a casting multiplier it can be horrendous if you get a birds nest.
It is fantasic on a multiplier boat reel as you dont have to cast.
After saying that I use braid on a casting multiplier by upping the breaking strain to 80lb making it easier to undo any birds nest should it happen.
Ok I know what your thinking 80lb!! But using 80lb Ron Thompson Cable braid is about the same diameter as 15lb mono, also I avoid having to use shockleader.
Its not everyones idea of fishing but it works for me.
I must point out that I have no connection with the manufactures of cable braid the only reason I recommend it is the fact that it has a very small diameter in comparison than most of the others I have tried.

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated i was thinking of doing something along the same lines as what rabbi was saying and leaving out the shockleader altogether also i have a shakespeare medalist reel which came with two spare spools one of which is specially made to hold braid as it is a lot more shallow than a normal spool so i think i'll give a it go soon.
thanks lads

I tried braid last year after 30 years fishing with mono/nylon, great bite detection and casts miles (when it dont birdsnest) which seemed to be every other cast take a sharp knife with you and a spare spool with mono, good luck!! |
