G'day, I'm new to the UK scene and would like some advice. I'm planning a trip to Anglesea and would like to know some good spots for beach and rock fishing - I'll be using lures and dead bait. I also purchased a tinsel mackeral trace and was wondering how you use it. Is it supposed to be used with a float or retrieved like a lure? Cheers

Hey there .... In regards to the tinsel mackerel trace it is a rig of 5-6 hooks with a loop to attach a wieght one end and the other is for the reel line. cast `em out and jig them back in ..ie retrieve them with a rising a sinking motion. If there are any mackerel they will take (quite often) all the hooks and you get a string of 5-6 fish.

When you say you are dead bait fishing does this mean you are using fish strips or whole fish? We rarely use whole fish over here as most of the fish prefer rag/lig worm, crab, muscle, razorfish etc. I good idea would be to pop into your local tackle shop and have a word with them. They'll be able to show you the baits we use and how to use them (ie tie them on with elastic or not).

ps. when spinning for mackrel retrieve quite quickly (pull - retrieve, pull -retrieve) a little different than using lures. You might need a few more traces if you are fishing rocky parts as it's best to alter your depths and speed as you never know where or how they're feeding and if you lose your only trace then it's an early bath. There's a section on this site which shows you which knots, rigs etc we use. Fishing can be very simple over here but it's good to get the basics.
