Hello, I am new to fishing and would like to start ASAP. I live in walking distance to a beach and would like to fish from that and off piers. I am not looking to catch anything in particular anything will do to start with. Can anyone offer me some advice on the following questions please, im sorry if they are basic but im getting a bit confused.
Would you advise buying a rod/reel from a local tackle shop or online? I am looking to spend around £50 to start with and I need to get some tackle, is there any makes I should go for or avoid? I notice that many rods have different casting oz then there are beach, pier, uptide and surf rods and then the lines are different yd/lb, it is a bit confusing what to start with.
All advice welcome thanks |

You'll learn what reels, rods and terminal tackle suit once you begin but I think the Penn Firetip range is superb value for beachcasting and pier work in all but stormy conditions. I have a 12 ft firetip surf rod capable of casting 100-150 yrds depending on conditions and terminal tackle with a fairly cheap and nasty Okuma fixed spool reel which is reliable and does the job. Don't buy a muliplier if you are starting out.
The Penn Firetip range is available as combos with decent quality Penn reels matched to the rod. I purchased the rod on its own for £30 from Castaways in Poole but they are stocked as combos at most of the big online suppliers.
I love my firetip fantastic value for money and real quality at the price.
If you are fishing from beaches in the SE then I'm wondering whether distance may be important 'cause there are some cracking cod venues in your area. Talk to anglers on your local beach and see what they advise.
You can buy rigs ready-made and the Gemini range is very good but the quicker you start making you're own rigs, and learning what tactics you need at the location you are using, the better. I like all the Gemini tackle bits and bobs, very easy for rig making. |
