Hi,
We are thinking of making the trip over to Ireland in September for a week or so on a family holiday. I am particularly keen to get a good spot to base ourselves around the fishing. We are getting the ferry into Rosslare so travelling anywhere about 1 or 2 hours from there would be great. Looking at beach, fly (trout) and perhaps a trip out on a boat.
Any advice you can give me on a location to cater for my aspirations would be fantastic. Perhaps looking at a self catering cottage and we need to get this booked up pretty soon.
Thanks very much in advance.

mcthemullet,
if you log on to the discoverireland.ie and click on the link for southeast (where Rosslare is) it should give you a good starting point for planning your holiday.
As for willing to drive one to two hours to fish (Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, etc for sea fishing), you'll have great access to some great sea fishing marks along the east coast and at points less than an hour inland from Rosslare are some brilliant rivers for Trout, Salmon, Pike etc but make sure that you are in season to fish on the fly on the rivers.
Boat charter can also be fairly straight forward in most of the harbours along the east coast.
Best of luck and if i get anymore precise information i'll post it for you,
kind regards,

hiya Mac,we had a weeks fishing last sept, booked a bungalow nr kilmore quay,co wexford.loads of rivers for trout/salmon tickets in wexford tackle shops.sea fishing your spoilt for choice,spinning/plugging the bass, beaches where you wont see another angler.you can get bait but mostly frozen.take a fork the beaches are crawling with lugg.boat fishing is at most harbours, kilmore quay is supposed to be a better 1.
we fished a different beach/rocks for a week and were at the most only 30mins from accomodation, fantastic.
take all your bits and bobs with you tackle is expensive.
hope this is some use to you and enjoy it.
dont cast far the bass are close in

MTP,
Thanks very much for the info and really glad you mention Kilmore Quay as my initial look at the area has highlighted this as a very beautiful and FISHY type place.
Where was it you stayed... and was it any good...??

no problem mac.the place we stayed i think was duncormack we rented a bungalow.
if you ring the irish tourist board they will send you a brocure of holiday lets.
they are dirt cheap and most include clean bedding etc.
the bungalow we stayed in is now sold,he was selling it when we stayed there.
kilmore quay is supposed to be the boat fishing port of wexford.there is loads of charters there.
kilmore has lovely quiet beaches for the missus and kids, few restraunts, pubs, chippyand afew shops.most irish anglers spin for bass.theres that many spots you wont fish them all.in sept we had bass, flounders, turbot, rays, dogs, and we were only bass fishing.take food with you the shops can be dear, eating out is preatty resonable, youll have a great time.troutandsalmon i dont know. regards |

Hi Mac,
I promote angling with the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board in Ireland, and live in County Wexford. If you need any help with planning your holiday regarding accommodation, charter boats, fish species, bait and tackle, venues, etc, just send me an email.
The ERFB website which is chock full of info' on Ireland's eastern counties is www.fishingireland.net.
