Good thing you went up in summer, mate. The weather gets real bad in winter! Who dares wins. |

Loch Long can get pretty miserable even in the middle of summer.

You can catch all year but spring time April May June ish is good for a variety of fish, I have found behind the amco barrier about 1 mile from dornie to be the best spot small tides are easier to fish if using leads. But spinning or float fishing with a sliding float set at ridiculous depths all fair well.Codling about 2Lb just eaters, pollack to 4 or 5lb conger around the 10lb mark are all possible ,plenty of wrasse some vary big devils are also available. This mark is well suited to the disabled like me and older children You don't need fancy baits float or spinner catch small resident fish that can be used as bait for the resident conger ,just be careful not to fall in.If there's some one fit with you the can climb down the rocks at low water and get mussel, this is one of the few self sufficient marks in Britain
where you can just roll up with tackle and no bait and come away with your supper, just start with a small artificial bait and work your way up ,great fun and your sat in the boot of your car
Hilux
Nearly forgot John will sort you out with damaged longuistines to boil up for supper there just great .He is the chap with the fishing boat at Dornie anchored next to the bridge ,There a decent caravan park and pub with food, and toilets next to the bridge with a stand pipe for water, but you wont get bothered if you get your head down in the car or tent.
1 of the best holiday marks in Britain in my mind and peacefull
And you can fish at any time of the day or tide because of the depth. |

Just doing the stir fry LOL

If you arrive at dornie castle then heading back inland
The first mark you come to within half a mile is a large pull in where you have a good view of the castle, this mark is for lure fishing and a easy climb down the rocks, this is not a low water mark.another 1/2 or 1 mile inland is the second mark on a bend, you pull in behind the armco barriers theres a large rock about 20 meter high, fitter fishers can walk around the rock and fish in good waters this mark can be fished at any state of the tide due to its depth , but i would not recomend fishing this mark in darkness ,you cannot see the castle from the pull in.

(hilux)I think by the sound of your description I was actually fishing on the opposite bank to you.
The beauty of these spots is (as the original question) is that if its blowing a hoolie they are really well sheltered.
I believe that these spots are not well known and not visited regularly and you can drive right up to the start of Loch Long (not the big well known one) although I think it becomes more fresh water and shallow the further up you go, but it is tidal. Plenty of otters and seals spotted so must have plenty of fish in.
To get to the opposite bank you need to drive from the castle across the bridge towards Lochalsh, about 0.25 of mile there is a bend and a right turn for Conchra. Follow the road up and takes you all the way up loch long. Parking near a spot is a bit of an issue though?
Loch Long (BUT not the bigger and better known one) showing just how sheltered it can be

thanks folks It has now moved up the list as a must visit /fish location ,so much so that have started looking at B/B s around easter
first I have a trip to Etive and one of Dougies Boats booked I love fishing Etive on a boat or some of the marks on shore, if you ever get the chance you should try it ,great for doggies spurdog pollack ect and it is also a great setting ,I have just bought some new boat rods and a couple of Alvey reels so cant wait to wet a line on the loch .
Ps fishing from Fort William car park is a good mark for big Pollack |

At the top of loch long there is a caravan park and they have their own slipway for which there is no charge. Plenty of good conger at the submarine penns. Very rocky bottom so lead lifters are the norm. cheers keith |
