I know this may seem a stupid question but i really don't know alot about braided line.
What are the difference's between braid and mono and is it worth putting a whole spool of it on my fixed spool reel for beach casting?? I only know that it doesn't really stretch! |

Don't know that much but it's supposed to give better bite detection because it doesn't stretch like mono. Only other things I know is that it doesn't work well on multipliers (tends to lock up) and it'll cut through mono pretty well if your lines get tangled! Keep 'em tight. |

Hi Mr Kicker,
I tried braid a while ago, for lure fishing, because as you rightly say, it has very little give in it so I would be constantly in touch with the lure and feel every touch. The other advantage of braid is it's diameter, lb for lb braid has a much smaller diameter allowing much more to be put on the spool, or a much higher breaking strain to be used.
That said, I'm back on mono, I had a hell of a problem getting knots to hold. All the knots I'd used successfully with mono simple slid through as if they were not there. Lost a very big pike (20lb+ - the air turned more than blue). I'm sure there are knots that work wonderfully with braid and should have found a forum like this and asked the question. Only just thought of that!!!!!
Also, found it incredibly hard to bite through. A bad habit from my youth, should use scissors I know, and I suppose thats a positive if a fish is trying to bite through.
Basically, I lost all confidence in it, got fed up with losing tackle and fish so went back to what I know best. Would probably give it another shot if I knew some knots that would hold.

hI,
I always use braid when lure fishing because of the above reasons mentioned but as for general fishing goes I use mono, either Suffix or Daiwa Sensor , I have had to many bad experiances beach casting with braid with bird nests when useing a multiplier reel as the mess is impossible to rectify and very costly to replace, mono is much easier to handle.I know a few serious match anglers here in North Wales who always use braid but these guys have five or six Multipliers in thier bag ready to go if they get a crack off and birds nest the reel during a comp.
I would say that if you use a large fixed spool reel you should be ok as I use a small fixed spool reel for lure fishing and never had any problems with it.
