To all those venturing out on the 2 boat. I hope we have an exceelent day.
I just thought I would start a fresh thread to learn a little more to this boat fishing Lark.
Best types of Rigs,
How much Bait needed for the day,
Best way to avoid sea sickness,
One rod or two rods (Is there room)
Is it just the Cod we will be targetting or what other species should we provide rigs for.
I know some of you have helped before Kopite and I appreciate the info you gave me when we last spoke.
I don't know how many of the 13 have or have not been out on a boat of these guys what they would appreciate to learn like myself regarding baits rods etc. I don't fancy running out of bait half way through the day or taking too much of the wrong bait ???
I am counting on my 2 pints of shrimp as a killer tip on my hook along with the squid worms mackie etc for my cocktails.
Cheers Cabrat "Dave"
Boy am I looking forward to this trip.................. |

Hello Dave,
It sounds like you got the bait right. However quantites im not so sure. its gonna depend on how many fish you catch lol. I will probably be taking three, possibly four boxes of squid and some makkie or bluey (bluey is part of the makkie family ).
Rods, two is ok it doubles your chances!!!
A standard running ledger rig is sufficient, every time i go out on a boat in the Thames we tend to use the same rigs and it produces many species.
The best way to prevent sea sickness. There are a number of travel sickness pills you can purchase however, ive found travel bands are the best (personal preference). These are elastic type wrist bands with a pressure button on them. This fits over the wrist and the pressure button sits on a pressure point on your wrist.
Another tip is when on a boat stick to the middle as there is less up and down motion rather than at he back or front of the boat .
There will probably be enough of us to make sure no one runs out of bait |

i don't think the boats big enough for 2 rods each, sea sickness a full english at least if you sick its very colourfull and we can all laugh and the fish will enjoy, p.s i'm counting on my 2 pints too but i don't think they'll be shrimp |

Macer looking forward to meeting you again and fishing with you on the Sensible boat. LOL
My mother-in-law picked me up set of the wrist bands when she heard I was going out on a boat and I will be taking a bit of Medication too.
Thanks for the tips.
Mick Hope you had a good Xmas please can i order a bit of your magic dust to put over my bait before I start fishing.
I have seen you bring in 3 fish on a 3 hook rig while those around you aren't catching.......
I'm determined to feed the fish before I catch them so they weigh more when cooked Ha ha.
So don't mind being little green round the Gills.
Frozentoes said "Quote" Don't come home till I have caught supper so i will be paying £1 per pound for a Cod if i blank Ha ha.
Keep the advice coming please.

What size hooks on the ledgering rigs ??
Bearing in mind I have the cod the size of a dustbin in mind !! D
Seriously I suppose 1-5/0's will suffice pref pennels for the larger baits. |

Cant even think about it myself, as have a lot on at work after Christmas,
But
Went out with my uncle on his boat with him and a few of his friends a couple of weekends ago, and we caught an absolute bin load of cod between us all between 2lb and 8.5 lb.
All we used were 4 - 5ft flowing traces with 4/0 single or pennelled hooks and for our bait we had about 10lb of squid between us which we used whole, plus a couple of packets of lug. The lug weren't much better for the cod, but they were for the whiting though !! |

Hello Dave, I am hoping to be fishing with an uptide rod (Can you please confirm the skipper will allow this Kopticol?) which means casting away from the boat with a slightly longer rod to a normal boat rod. If allowed I may stick a whole squid on an additional normal downtide boat rod for the bigger fish, but in my experience from the past if the boat is not very large this is more likely to cause tangles between anglers. So maybe Kopticol needs to enquire from the skipper in advance what the ground rules are so we don't have to bring unecessary tackle. |

Good point Essex dave,
No doubt once Kopite has returned from a drunken stupor( Liverpools win this afternoon) I'm sure he will let us know.
Col when you get chance are the two boats similar in size to the ones on your earlier boat trip with the pictures on this site ????????
Please Keep the questions coming so we are all aware of what to expect.
I CAN't WAIT......
Frozentoes has upped the insurance on me so its Cod or the Insurance money haha |

i think they will be staying in the estuary lee, hopefully the weather will be good to us then the deepest we will fish is 50-60ft and should be targeting the cod uptiding or downtiding? the choice is yours they may venture as far as the towers or may just be fishing inshore marks such as w leigh middle, the swatchway, nore sand or the cant hope this is of some help? |

Dave,
I will be taking 1 No. uptide rod as my boat rod is too heavy duty for this type of fishing. You can still plonk the uptide rods over the side aswell as cast uptide with them so the skipper should not have a problem with them.
One other tip is to not put your lead weights on until right before you are ready to cast over the side. This is the same as when the boat moves location (you remove your weights and put them somewhere safe). This is because the swinging weights can cause damage to the boat. |

Thank you for that I never knew that about the weights and boats getting damaged..
See this on posting is teaching us all the time.
I'm gonna take two rods. couple of reels I'm busy at present making rigs and hook lengths as will be no doubt asking a few questions with my fellow crew mates.
I am hoping this is one of many adventures we as a forum will be going on.
