Are you sitting comfortably? then I'll begin.
Well we got to the tackle shop at Horden & were duly supplied with enough bait to fish.....forever! & also directed to the best mark to catch fish. Unfortunately the road down to the beach was sheet ice & Dave in his Pajero was more than reluctant to go down, as we all were. So we decided that, as time was getting on, it would be the old faithful Steetleys pier that we'd grace with our presence. Got there about 10.15 & within 30 mins Tony had a decent whitey, which were consistent (ish) all day. Highlight of the day came when Sam says to me, 'here, Jimmy, handball this up I think it's a good un' so I leans over the pipe & starts hauling. I caught a glimpse of Free Willy still in the water before I started pulling then lost sight, but IT WAS HEAVY! Finally got hold of the trace & some swivels etc, felt a wiggle then............line goes light &.......SPLASH! bloody thing fell off. Anyway according to the 2 eye witnesses (Dave & Tony) It was probably in the region of 8-10lb. I don't know who was most gutted, me or Sam but i know i just stared at the trace in my hand for about 10 seconds. i looked round at Sam & there was tears rolling down his cheeks. (just kidding)
From then on it was whiteys again, all decent + a couple of flatties. One guy next to us had a 5 1/2 lb Codling. we came away at about 7.30 all basically happy (except Sam) with our bag of 12. Excellent day.
Another thing we saw was a pod of Porpoises playing around about 150 yards off the end of the pier, nice. |

Lots of pier fishermen around here have a ring net or take a big treble hook with a weight on the bottom for getting the big fish out of the water. Usually someone has one. One time I watched a fellow tire out a salmon then walk it back to shore so he could get it. |

The trouble with Steetleys is those pipes, your'e fishing over the top of them & you have to lean over them to pull stuff up. Maybe thats why I've never seen anyone use a drop net there.
Difficult to explain where the pier is unless you know Hartlepool, but if you come off the A19 & down past Hart Village & keep going over the roundabouts, at the 3rd one look straight ahead & you'll see the old chimney, basically you need to be right next to it. Ask one of the locals for directions, that'll be easier than explaining it on here! |
