well here it goes.
1st day
started off picking all the boy's up (6) and packed the bus to the roof, nice steady drive up to Holyhead from Dagenham 6 hrs with a 1 hr stop.
got to Ireland and had to drive 5 more hrs to get to Westport arrived at 9 pm saw the gov of The Helm we was staying and got sorted park the bus and it was free beer and sandwichs to late for a hot meal .
2nd day
went down to Westport to find the tackle shop nice shop all the gear you need under 1 roof and got a tide table spoke to Doug in the shop (more about that later) and he put us onto some local marks.
picked up sand eel and mackerel and off we went.
went about 15 miles up the road to a peir all set up and the sun come out (lovely) fished the tide down not a bit so it was off back to the hotel and plan for tomorrow.
3rd day
we drove about 45 mile to a great mark now we had a tide table and fished the tide up as well as down ( waders needed here ) we got 1 thornback 5 lb, 2 brill about 2-3 lb and some dabs, then it was back to Westport some lunch and get ready for the evening tide. same again tide up and down caught doggies about 10 in total (only 5 fished) stopped at about 9 pm then into the pub (boy can these people party) we went up at 11 and you could still here the music at 6 am.
4th day
we went out on a boat this time shamrock 1 owned by a Mary Gavin-Hughs meet here at about 9.30 am and off we went the sea was very choppy but we gave it a go after about 1 hr going out it was feathers on mackerel out by the box load then it was lets try near 1 off the other marks but 2 of the boys wanted to speak to God and show us the breekie they had to eat so mary took us to carmer waters we got 40 + pollock all in the 7lb ond over useing jellies 1 dab 1lb coddling 2lb cockoo wrasse 2lb (nice colours) then at about 5 pm we went back.
5th day
we went down to see Doug at the tackle shop to see how we get out to one of the islands he arranged a boat to get us out and told us all it was the local ferry meet up at 10.30 got out to the place but was not told it was a route march to get to the mark 4 miles over some real bad ground so we turned back got onto the ferry and found out it would cost us 330 euros to get back and to see Doug that was the price ( so beware boys this guy is a rip-off because it is not a ferry but a chater and that is the going rate ) so it was back to the peir and fished that doggies again.
6th day
back to the beach tide up and down not a bite so back to the Helm and get ready to go home.
i hope this helps the next lot who may go out to Westport we all had a great timeand are planning how trip for next year but with a bit more insight to the area we would have planned it better with a tide table and got most of the things right but Vinnie the gov of the Helm put us right most of the time. |
