hello all i hope the fishing is going well.
i have found a large area of lugworm casts in my local area. does the size of the cast relate to the size of the worm that made them.
[ small cast = small worm] there are some big cast but most are small. and i dont wont to take the small worms for bait if it means wipeing out any future stock. any help would be great.
cheers needafish |

hi mate
i dig bait all the time and i would definately say no the cast has no bearing on the worm ive dug a really small cast and pulled out a jungle monster!! i find the bigger worms are close to the beach.
thats how it is in hastings and mainly yellows with a few big black beasts thrown in!! |

yes, but no.usually the thicker the spoil, the bigger the worm. but the size of the complete cast doesn't really tell you wether they are big or small.
before digging you need to look at the casts and see if they're commons or yellows. this will determine how you dig for them.
i usually dig the small worms for match fishing and find it's not the size of worms that are taken that effects the bed, but how many people dig it. if it's a good bed then try and keep it a secret, when word gets round it might get hammered like many good beds have in my area. |

usually the yellow tail casts are very neat and in a circular casts, however where i dig are not that neat but sort of in acircular shape. the spoil doesn't sort of pile up, it sits flat on the sand.
the commons give a messy spoil where the sand trail piles up in no real order. there are usually alot more commons in a smaller area than yellows.
i hope this makes sense |

Hi bigguy,
hope to get down Deal golf course or Sandwich Bay in the near future.... do you dig or do you pump bait yourself....
if you do pump bait my question is... ' do you collect bait at either of the above places'??
I have just made my own bait pump... based on the one that Phildalt has... his works so i am hoping that mine will... i should know this Friday (28th April) as i am going to St Leonards (Hastings) to try it out..
what i am thinking is to come down to say, 'the Chequers' in a couple of weeks when hopefully the tides are right to collect bait and fish the mark... have not been there for about 25 years... from memory there were concrete paths leading towards the beach and it was a fair old hike, or am i thinking of the Tenth Hole.
if you are fishing that way then maybe we can meet.
any news about Smuts....???
Tight lines

yes i do pump and dig down the bay. the pump only really works on the wet sand to give the suction. in the dry sand your better of digging.
i'd dowt the tide will go enough to dig the chequers unless there's a big off shore wind. the bay is digging quite well at the mo though.
as for fishing it's abit slow at the mo. and the 10th green track has now been closed, so thats a bigger walk than chequers. i would say there should be some bass down the bay soon, prob some flatties at walmer and a few smuts might be between 10th and sandown castle.
let me know nearer the date your coming down and i'll try and give advice on where, what, bait, etc.
would be good to meet, hopefully i won't have a match when your down. |

I THOUGHT THE SIZE OF THE CAST RELATED TO THE DEPTH IT WAS DOWN THE MORE THE DEEPER. AND THE SIZE OF THE WORM WAS THE DISTANCE FROM THE CAST TO THE HOLE. |
