Some are absolute rubbish. The best bet is to give somebody like Veals a ring, tell them your budget and what you will be fishing for etc and ask their advice as to what to buy.
There are some perfectly adequate budget priced rods and reels on the market but always buy the best that will fit your budget as you will very quickly realise the abilities of the tackle you have and want to upgrade!

I'd agree about the budget thing, but would also recommend discussing it with the people at your local tackle shop - they'll be more than helpful and will probably not oversell anything - especially if they want your repeat business.

Best of luck.
