Hi all, I cant get my head around the fact that everyone is complaining about the whiting? rather catch nothing then would we?? dont get me wrong they can be a pest, because like you all, I have had loads as well but I would rather be unhooking a fish whatever species than just chucking pricey bait into the sea for no reason! come on guys give them a break and just enjoy the fact that we are at least getting something! Rant over, I'm going fishing and I dont care what I catch, as long as I do. P.S if you are catching small whiting use larger hooks pennel style, when you know that you have one on, which will happen, just leave it out there and you might just get that big elusive cod swim by and not be able to resist that little whiting who does'nt seem to be going anywhere. Its worked for me in the past. |

I agree, I guess, with what you say. My mind set for fishing is to catch something, always, and there have been times when I have been very grateful for whiting as there was nothing else bending the rod, but I suppose once you've caught a couple your mind moves on to bigger things!
Same as the dogfish, I defend them as someone else did on here. Some see them in the same light as whiting, however they do fight a bit more and taste better! ( so I'm told as strangely I can't eat fish!!!!!!! )
I usually try and fish two rods, one with a flapper type rig, although I prefer a clipped down one up one down, small hooks for keeping me busy, then the other rod I will try a larger pulley rig in the hope of something bigger.
Mind you I haven't had a decent fish all year so what do I know!!!!!!
Happy fishing to all

Totally agree!! I'm still new to the game and i've posted a message in the past - what am i doing wrong? 'Cos i wasn't catching a thing - not good for the confidence!! I fished Hythe last night using a pulley pennel 1.0 and caught loads of whiting....my mate caught a decent size codling, so i'm not complaining. |

Whiting? Whiting? I would LOVE to have caught a Whiting today. What did I catch? Nuffing!
Just home after spending 1030 till 1530 at Hythe casting generously rag / lug /squid baited rigs and reeling them back in almost untouched. My lad pulled a 10" bass in, and the guy down the beach a similar pouting, but no Whiting, oh no!
Looking along the whole stretch couldn't see anyone doing much better either. Any tips on what went wrong much appreciated |

Kentishman, Thanks for reply. We based ourselves about 50 yards away from the working section of beach, where they haul in the small fishing vessels....and I suppose about 200 yards from the Army Firing Range. It was handy as we parked next to the sea wall. It's the first time that I've been to Hythe, and apart from the fact that I had no nibbles, its a lovely site. The kids have just bought me a nice shiney new Coleman lamp, so I've got no excuse for not doing a spot of night fishing soon. Will have to check tides and see when I can make it! |

I dont think ive caught a whiting yet, I think the problem here is we go out and target a particular fish, and if we catch something different to what we actually want, we resent that fish taking the bait and having us bait up and cast out again. When i go out now i target cod, last saturday i blanked again, after 3 hours of targeting cod, i got to the stage where any fish would do, then to a point where pulling a crab in would have been better than empty hooks every time. I didnt get one single nibble, a lot of expense just to see a blood red moon rising over the sea on the horizon. |

Hey Manic_Muppet, you might have blanked, but what poetry it inspired from you!!
Good to see that a well established angler like you can have an off day too - beginning to think I had duff pheremones or something |
