Hi saltfly,
Good to hear you want to give it a try. Take a look at the General Sea Fishing forum where you will find loads of info and even some pictures of some recommended flies. I've not caught on the fly in saltwater yet, but looking forward to some slightly warmer weather to try it out properly.

Saltfly,
Like yourself I became disillusioned with catching tiddlers and opted to give the fly a go. This will be my 5th year and I haven't looked back. Once everything clicks into place it can be a thoroughly rewarding way of catching fish. Keep your patience and percivere with it. I remember my first season, I caught about a dozen small Bass all year with plenty of blanks, but enjoyed every minute. In my second season I took a conscious decision to leave the bait and spinning gear at home and fish exclusively with the fly. Boy what a difference that made. No more reaching for the tried and trusted when the fly wasn't working, but it paid off and I caught a lot of fish - Bass, Mackerel, Scad, Pollock and even a couple of very small Mullet. Every one put a bend in the rod.
The last two years have been even better. Bass to 6lb 8oz, catches of 20-30 fish and more on some occasions. Still learning, still trying to understand, still enjoying. I thought I knew the spots I fished, but fishing the fly has opened my eyes to a whole lot I never noticed sat behind a pair of beachcasters. You have to think about your fishing more. Pay more attention to tides, time of day and a whole host of other stuff. Then there's the flies. I roll my own nowadays and there's nothing more satisfying than catching a fish on a fly you have tied yourself.
Feel free to ping any questions you have my direction and I'll try my best to answer them (This applies to anyone). Tackle, Tactics, Flies are all open season, but don't ask me for exact marks, as a good productive fly fishing mark is hard earned and like the other salty fly fishers I know, kept very close to my chest and there's a huge satisfaction in solving the puzzle yourself anyway.
