Hi All,
First post on this forum so go gently
Iv been Bass fishing for a few years now, and for the first time this year im gonna try my hand at some winter cod fishing with the brother inlaw..
Iv read loads and loads of reviews on rods / reels rigs etc, but for local knowledge i thought i would give this forum a try for advice (as im from south wales)
So any advice on the following would be much appreciated;
Rod: The takle shop by me has a pretty cool deal on. They have a Shimano Nexave-BX 13ft & a Navi 7000 Fixed Spool reel for £99.99 - that sounds quite good to me caus of the Shimano quality etc, would anyone else agree? Also whats the thoughts on rod lengths? is 12ft still the main preference beachcaster?, or is the 13ft a better idea for longer casts etc??
Rigs: When using the Pennel pully, what size sinker leader / hook length is best, also the breaking strains?
Hooks: What size are best? and are circle's the ones to go for?

Ive got a 13 foot beachcaster but to be honest, in my humble opoinion, you should have a rod that doesnt bend as soon as a draft hits the line ( so to speak) A rod which is too stiff will be like a broomstick and might not give the bite detection that they want. I think the best option is to find someone who lives near you and get them to go with you to a shop to try out different rods.
Where do you live in south wales and what shops are nearby ? maybe someone can pop along to check some gear out.
Is £100 your top line budget ? I know a lot of people use the daiwa sandstorm and are very happy with it. I havent tried it though, but the rod would take your budget up a bit.
As i said, having someone to pop along with you would be best, much better than listening to some of the salesmen out there.
The pulley pennel is my favorite rig. It will get you bass, ray, cod amongst other fish.
I generally use a 4oz weight, 5 if it isnt holding, using 50lb leader line.
hooklength can differ. I use from various hooklenths depending on sea conditions and what fish im after.
Hooks - I prefer to use 2/0 and 1/0 hooks on my rigs as i can still get the smaller fish if they are feeding, whereas i found bigger hooks often lost the smaller fish. With a 2/0 as bottom hook ive had some nice rays and a codling since starting up again, and in the good old days with my club i remember catching very nice fish on the same size.
I use amnesia line for my hooklength and normally use 20lb B/S. with 50lb rig body.
Dont take what i say as gospel, a lot will disagree with me and have their view. I just use what has proven to work for me, up to now that is
