I'm guessing that I do need to use one?

Using 20lb ML so is 60lb about right for the SL?

Also using a 9'6" rod I need 19'2" of SL i.e. twice the rod lenght?

Depends what lead you're casting (10lbs breaking strain for every oz of lead tends to be the rule of thumb ie. 6oz = 60lb).

As for length of shockleader, I tend to use 6 turns on the reel (when about to cast).

Hope this helps.

I agree with rab 40lb rather than 60lb , depending on what you are after if its tope you will need heavier. You will probably only need a short cast and 40 lb will be ok up to 8oz. 20-25 ft length will be fine , use a leader even if downtiding , it takes all the wear and tear and its good to have a few turns of heavy line back on the reel when that big fish is being netted.

Call me old school (but I prefer better safe than sorry - particularly as the latest leaders are much reduced in diameter!).

What knots do you use to tie on the shockleader to the mail line?
