hello oddjob , first of all how much are you willing to part with so we can give you ome idea's
also as it's your first il say make sure its got a levelwind which in abu it the cs verions the ct are open framed .
the line can be between 15-20lb and if you use a 5oz weight then 50lb shockleader , its 10lb leader for every oz , i use 15lb red ice with 60lb powerflex tapered leader .
hope that helps m8

determine what type of ground you will be fishing mate, then choose ya reel, aint no good wanting to fish heavy ground then opting for an ABU reel, they aint got the guts to cope with heavy ground,BUT if ya gonna fish clean ground then opt for either an ABU MAG ELITE,or a PENN 525 SUPERMAG,the supermag will cope with any type of ground, and go for one without level wind, only takes an hour or so to learn how to thumb the line on correctly |

I agree with medlar go for the supermag or similar tough reel for the heavy scarborough rock and kelp fishing . Level wind reels are more trouble than their worth as its the first thing to clog with weed, fill with grit and wear out. As medlar says learn to level the line with your thumb properly it becomes automatic like riding a bike (if you learn without stabilisers you learn faster), if you have level wind you never learn. |

or the Daiwa Slosh varieties.......... you'll need a good cranking reel for that part of the world which means the mag elite et al are no good unfortunately |
