i can cast and wind in fine with both the millionaire and the 6500c3 but what ever the part is that stops the spool from unwinding once you have stopped winding seems to be hit and miss sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt,is anybody able to help or tell me if this is a common problem and is it an easy fix.
THANKYOU |

hi mate , i can normally fix abu's but what i cant understand is your having this problem with the 6500 and the 7ht , are you on about the button you press to free spool does that jam ?? it sounds like the button aint released the clutch proberly , so its when you stop winding in then goto start again if so does the spool stick or do you wind in and the spool dont move ?? im bit lost and chance you can give us few more details .

sorry yep il try, once i have cast with either reel and taken up the slack both buttons pop out to stop the spool from unwinding further.as i understand it (please correct me if wrong)there are two wheels on the same shaft a fine one and a very coarse one tooth and pawl im presuming its this thats slipping and i would have thought that there would be some sort of spring attached to pull the pawl onto the coarse teeth to stop the spool unwinding ???? i think ive said that right ???
sorry if a bit vague
thanks for replying |

I think the problem is that you have the star drag too slack and the spool spins even though the gears are engaged and you are turning the handle.
Tighten the star shaped wheel that is on the right hand side just inside the handle. This should cure your problem. Don't go mental with it - just enough to stop the drag washers slipping on the retrieve.
Remember to slacken the drag off when you have finished your fishing session or you will shag the drag washers. |

fanx for your input but its not anything to do with the drag, what ever the mechanism is that stops the handle from reversing once you have cast out and once that little button has popped out as well.
i thank you |

The spool release button that you press to cast should engage the gears first turn of the handle . The anti reverse pawl engages the gears and not the spool so if the spool backwinds (and the handle too ) when in gear the anti reverse pawl and spring may be dirty or broken. Hope this helps..... |

yay thats the ticket, now the pawl in my millionaire has a thin piece of metal wrapped round the pawl ,should this thin piece of metal stick out above and below the gear wheel where the pawl locks on2,is this how the pawl operates. |

Never had a millionaire to pieces but it sounds like the thin piece of metal could be a spring which is not doing what it should. If you haven`t got the parts diagram try mikesreelrepair.com which has lots of schematics and might help ..............sniggle |

probably shagged anti reverse bearings then. Take it to local tackle shop and get them to sort them.
Or get a Penn 525 which has more cranking power with a faster retrieve - or beter still, learn how to pump the rod when reeling to preserve the gears. Your tackle shop will help. |
