Hi,
I'm going to Dawlish for a few days in September, thanks to 'The Sun', always take my telescopic rod etc. (and wife) so wheres the best place to fish nearby?
Cheers.
PS. any shops nearby where her ladyship can max the credit card and keep her out of my way? |

Dunno about the fishing at Dawlish. Pop the missus on the train to exeter. Exeter and Plymouth have both got new city centre shopping centres, and Torquays got a few nice shops too. Teignmouth has some nice pubs with good beer and atmosphere, and Cockwood has a couple of good seafood pubs. Dawlish has nothing but some black swans, and i think they left after one was attacked by some idiots.
If you are at Dawlish Warren then Cockwood is within walking distance for the pubs. Also up that way there are a few places you can fish onto the mud. There are still a few big flounder left in the Exe, and I would guess spinning off the end of the warren into the exe may produce some bass as well but i've never tried it. Fishing off the Warren on the seaward side used to produce some decent plaice a few years ago, but i really don't know now. Thinking about it, the last time i was at The Ship at Cockwood, there were numbers of large mullet in the little harbour there - fish up to 5lb plus |

Cheers Pugwash,
I think if she has to get the train then she'll drag me along. The Ship sounds just right for a pint, food and to wet a line, plus she can keep an eye on me! Been known to go fishing and stay out longer due to the need to get some good beer down my neck.
She's good really and generally lets me go off fishing when I want to, which is quite often as we live in Poole, so plenty of places to disappear of to fish and have a pint.
Thanks again. |

Just along at Exmouth, on the dock is real easy, should be a little quieter then too! 20 minute drive from Dawlish. Access is very easy and there's plently of bait available and very cheap. Parking on the dock is £1.50 for 2 hours - you fish right by the car!
Oh, and lots of shopping for the 'trouble n strife', you'll be right next to the marina with its grand selection of shops. |

Dawlish to Exmouth in 20 mins! Maybe by speedboat but 30 to 40 minutes minimum by car.
Anyway, I fished off the pier last night for 30 minutes. I'd forgotten the strength of the current there, must be 6 knots. There were a couple of mackerel caught on feathers. However, earlier i had walked along the beach and third breakwater along from Orcombe Point there was a couple of shoals scattering the baitfish for quite a while. Of course, as soon as i went back the 400yds or so to the car for a rod they went. |

Thats funny me and my sons were staying at Hazelwood park in mid july we caught loads of Mackerel off the warren after dark , the bloody things were coming up on to the beach as well , you could catch em with your hands.
My son caught a small Turbot and a bass as well suppose they were hunting those small herrings(think they were herrings?) as well.
We saw the seal as well but that was by the groyne by the Town! |
