| My friend and I have fished the pier a few times now, the last 2 trips we've walked off the pier with a big bag of whiting and then a bag of coalies. We had a couple of Cod on our first trip but none since, anybody got any tips on where we might be going wrong? We always have plenty of fresh bait and fish 20-30m past the locked gates into the harbour |

Not 100% but I used to fish there a lot as a young'un but now fish mainly up Roker way. I tend to find the top of the pier is best or as close as possible. The water coming into the tyne churns near the pier ends which seems to attract the fish (not a marine biologist but this has been the same for years). If there is plenty of fresh water coming from the river you might want to try the south side of the pier where it is a bit more sandy and won't be affected by the tyne water. You mentioned live bait. Try using a bit squid or muscle to tip off you worms or even peeler crab (with a only a fewe turns on your bait elastic). I wouldn't say you were doing anything wrong but these tips may help improve your chances. Also you could try alternating your rigs. Sometime little things go a long way but if there cod aren't there they aren't there which has been quite a regular thing this season. Hope this helps.

| Sounds like fish may have moved away mate. You didn't say if you are getting bites? This has been the same with me down business park on river tyne. Sometimes the place will be full of fish but then for months it can go without a single fish. I think you may have been lucky with a shoal of fish at the time. |

It is better to fish 2 hours before high tide or 2 hours after. You should try the first gate there is decent size cod taking from there or maybe try the coves but only at low tide extremely dangerous there wa a 27lb cod taking from one of the coves about a month and a half ago hope this advice tell you and hear is a website with more info.
