Read about fishermen using ballons to "float" their rig out using the wind/tide.
A quick search on the web mainly refers to BIG fish fishing, and using bouys, not ballons.
Has anyone ever tried this tactic for beach casting?
Just curious really  |

it would seem a good idea, but how on earth would you be able to cast out?? unless you give it a little under arm cast and as you say "let the wind/tide do the rest.
as for giving it large i dont see how it could be done!! with out loosing the ballon itself.
anyway thats my opinion, for the said topic. |

what about radio controlled boats?
steer the boat out to exactly where you want to drop your lead, baits not been in the water either losing its scent while getting it to where you want it. |

Nah, balloon filled with helium and an air rifle. If all else fails, you can always try shooting the fish! |

I have used balloons to carry very large baits a long way off Walton Pier. I haven't done any good though. I think this is mainly due to there being no large fish around any more to take such a large bait. My method is to attach the balloon to my rig using a polo mint. The rig floats a long way before the polo melts and it then drops to the seabed. I've heard that the fruit polos last longer. I'm glad this post has come up as the next time I'm on the pier I think I might give it a go as I haven't tried it for a year or more. I wonder if a pin whiting can swallow 4 squid  .

Never used balloons(not for fishing anyway), used to use a Westwinder when I was a kid.
Made a small sail and attached it to a piece of wood, tied some nylon to the wood, put a dozen hooks or so on the nylon then launched my fish catcher.
Spent hours doing this as a bairn. And caught fish.
Before anyone says anything, yes, you needed a westwind blowing offshore.
    happy days. |
