codling!

Hi all me and a mate fished at ramsgate on sunday night low tide up to high, and it was one of the best nights for a long time!! In all we had seven codling ranging from about a pound being the smallest to four pound the heaviest, I know these are not massive fish but very encouraging to say the least, and also a small bass and a big old doggie. Baitwise we used a mixture of frozen black lug, fresh yellowtails, squid, cockles and prawn, and believe it or not the prawns were the killer bait!! All I can say is that long may it continue, and heres hoping for a bumper cod season. Tightlines, martin.

Alright mate. Just read your message i have been told to use prawns as bait i must try it out at the weekend. Im glad you had a good session well done mate.. big grin

How did you hook the prawns? I'm a newby myself and have some frozen prawns ready to go for tomorrow night.

Hi ace, the way I was baiting up was using a pennel pulley rig pass the bottom hook through a whole squid (pointy end up) and hook it up on the top hook, then put a couple of worm on so it goes up inside the squid and then tip off with two or three prawns, all you do is put them on head first and the natural curve of the prawns body just goes around the hook, easy peasy! then you should be left with a nice big bait giving off a decent scent trail, leading to a nice plump codling, Good luck.

Hi there just been looking through a few bits relate to prawns for bait. It says to use them whole on the hook. Just add some squid away you go. Well thats how i will try it may even try them on their own let you know of the outcome or maybe there is someone outthere who kows just how to use prawns for bait Ive got a bag of normal prawns and a bag of tiger prawns. I think the fish will be eating better than us lol.. big grin
