Or, try white on one snood, and a different colour, or colours on another and see what happens. |

For Plaice and Dabs, reds yellows blacks oranges etc. But for Flounders, certainly around my way all colours come a very poor second to white. I've done well with white plastic Flounder spoons, white beads and I even use the long white booms from Cox and Rawle for them. The theory is (for Flounder anyway) that when they see the white beads or whatever they think its a smaller fish trying to get the bait and go for it first. Whatever colour or colours you plump for fish them just above the hook.
Personally I wouldn't bother unless the water is clear. Standard method of targetting them round here is a three boom rig with No4 fine wire aberdeens. Heat the bend (and only the bend) of the aberdeens a few times with a lighter and let them cool in the air as this softens the metal. Cast said rig baited out short with Maddies or Ragworm into a depression, gulley, by the side of a patch of rough ground or alongside a beach groin (especially in shaded water) etc and once you have got everything to settle and you know the lead is not moving let off some slack line from your rod as this will ensure that all baits are on the bottom.
This is the tuffy ..... ignore the rod for 20 - 30 minutes despite any rattles you get. The only time you pick it up is when you think you are going to lose your rod early. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly the fish will happily hook themselves by this method but strikes will often lose you a lot of fish and secondly Flounders shoal and if one fish is hooked and begins to flap about it is likely to attract others - this is often why one particular angler can catch them 3 at a time.
Finally don't be afraid of deep hooking - if you have one deep hooked and you cant reach the hook you can pull the trace gently and,if you've softened the hook well enough it will straighten and pull out easily. Studies have also proven that fish survive fine if you cut off the snood and leave the hook in them to loose themselves.
incidentially these tactics work every bit as good for sole and dabs - sorry a bit war and peace but i was bored anyway |

Might be preaching to the converted but don't be afraid to fish in extremely shallow water either - flounders will follow the tide along gulleys etc in 2 inches of water and I've caught Sole and Flounder right under the rod top, against the sea wall i was standing on with only a foot of water there. Without fail I've always found round my way that the bigger Flounders come out in the daylight, loads of postage stamps at night. They'll be fighting fit right now and feeding up ready to head out to spawn after Christmas ..... bit early for them round my way as yet but not long now |
