|
|
I was chatting with a m8 the other day and the subject of feeders come up and it started me thinking why us sea anglers use them so little? I mean if you think about it feeders are more suited to sea fishing than freshwater with the tide speading the scent, most of us use certain baits because of the juice or smell of it and a feeder would attract fish ten fold compaired to just a hook bait on its own. I have used them in the past when flattie bashing and it seemed to work so Im going to try fishing 1 rod with and 1 without to see what happens anybody got any views? |

Hi there I have been pondering the same thing it works in freshwater they would probably work 100 times better in the sea, piers and docks etc. Fill one with a cocktail and let it do the work. Might try the same set up you mentioned before. Can i use carp rods for this its all i have for now. |

Yeah I've tried it a couple of times and coming from a coarse background it seemed to work. Manufacturers now have to figure out how to get the weight and grippers onto a feeder and also keep some weight in the empty / emptying feeder. The only real problem I found was lack of weight or grip and just pulling round on the tide.
Also tried (but aint got a clue whether it worked or not) was cotton wool soaked with fishy smells stuffed in a heavy coarse fishing feeder. Caught on it, but any more or less than normal???? But again not heavy enough really for sea tides??? |

| Already done it but not that often and it does work: Used 35mm film canister with a few holes bored in it and stuffed with mashed bread tuna and mackerel. Strung it at the bottom of the rig just above the sinker and boy did the whiting come running. There are only so many whiting required by HID however so I don't do it that often. |

Hi there been in the shed again have made a weighted feeder out of an old float tube with a weighted top and an open bottome with holes drilled all the way round. The feeder weighs 4oz with bait full of squid lug mackeral basically whatever i can get my hands on. baited should weigh around 5-6 oz. what do you think. |

I think, you've either got a stash of home made wine, girlie mags or your computer set up to this forum in your shed ! ? ?
Oh sorry, I see what you mean, "what do I think to your feeder idea"
Yeah good, but how can you attach some grippers to it? |

Just had a idea about changing this feeder into a float take the weight off and add a floating top to it its a float feeder use a weight and a 2 hook set up and off you go when you cast the weight will hit the bottom and the float will land letting out the bait to float into the direction of your hook bait. I dont know i will give it a go at the weekend. |

My problem is Casting with the feeder on can u fix grips etc or do they still need weight if so distance casting isnt going to work. Strong tides moving the feeder around too much and maybe having opposite effect on fish by scaring them away once attracted.
If solution for distance casting can be sorted then maybe i would give a try. |

| I was thinking do you know the plastic grip weights you can buy, I cant see any reason why you could not use it some how as the feeder that way it could sit just above the weight making it better to cast either this or make a longer thiner feeder so it could fit over a grip lead |

| I don't think this is a distance casting thing or can be worked very well with a fast tidal current. A fast current is going to carry the scent away too quickly and any additional item on the rig is going to reduce distance. When we did it last year, we were casting about 60 yds into a moderate current at night and it worked fine with the whiting. I guess there were a fair few whiting inshore anyway and they soon homed in. However, trying to cast the rig say 120 yds is just not on no matter how you try it, commonsense has to prevail. |
