Since my last post I decided to take a trip to Clacton pier with a vain hope of picking up a fish or two.
Silly me!
I arrived shortly after 9am with my daughter in tow and found about 20 anglers already set up and fishing. Not realising that at this time of year you can fish from places other than the berthing arm, I set up next to a nice fella not 20 yards from the gate on the right. Armed with lug and fresh mack for tipping, our two rods were sent out short and slightly to the right. About an hour later, the numbers had risen to roughly 35-40 anglers casting all round the pier end.
Needless to say after 5 hours, three lost rigs and the possibility of one little nibble, I blanked out and we came home. I'm happy to say that I still enjoyed the session and more to the point, so did my daughter.
I was in good company though. Out of all the anglers putting lead in the water, not many were pulling fish out. What fish that were caught - small dabs, codling and pouting - I believe were not of any size to mention. The guy next to me said that it had been a very bad day for fishing.
After reading the postings in this forum, I'm not sure if concrete could have offered any pearls of wisdom but if he could, I'd like to hear them.
Cheers for reading.

I usually fish Clacton Pier for codling only. I use 4/0 pennells and send them out as far as I can. I usually fish at the bend on the berthing arm. Daylight fishing is pretty awful at the minute, we need a serious rough up.
Fishing the pier surrounded by 40 or more anglers doesn't sound like fun to me, next time if I were you I'd go along the side of the pier to escape the crowds. Lets face it you're still way beyond casting distance from the shore.
