artificial and frozen baits. any good?

Live 100 miles+ from coast so most of the time very rarely get in to a sea tackle shop to be able to buy fresh bait.
Often go at a moments notice so like to have some back up.
Normally fish North Norfolk.
Does anyone have any opinions on these artificial lugs, rags, frozen, etc. Any good? or any others out there anyone would recommend?

Frozen are fine big grin

lazy lug etc in my opinion are rubbish!
try and phone a tackle shop and order fresh if i were you

One somebody suggested to me, was to take a squid body and remove the insides, then take some mussels, or cockles, or raw crab meat which you should be able to get from a good fishmongers and stuff it inside the squid. Then simply close the open end of the squid up with bait elastic, and moun on a pennel rig and tie it on with bait elastic again. Stab some holes through it to let the juices out and there you go, so i have been told, a great cod bait.
Havent tried it myself yet, but i will do over the near future........

FRozen lug, salted lug, frozen peeler crab, frozen mackerel and frozen mussels are all good baits, dont try to freeze ragworm. cheers keith

Tried essexkenny's idea of stuffing squid (with a mash of mackerel and sardines).
It looks good and gives a really tough outer with hopefully the inners oozing out????
Going to try it at the weekend. Will let you know how I get on

All is not lost for the guys that cant get fresh bait.

Im in the fortunate position of having fresh bait available all the time, however I have tried frozen baits with much success.

Herring
Mackerel
Frozen Black Lugs
Squid

These will all catch and are a good substitute when fresh stuff isnt available. Keep it simple sometimes a bait fished on its own as opposed to coctails is the best way.

I forgot to mention that I have caught Smoothounds on frozen peelers and my mate caught the biggest Whiting Ive ever seen on Frozen sandeel.

Hi, I do the same thing, fill a squid body with lug, tie it, prod it etc, this gives it a longer life if the crabs are out. Ive not caught on it yet, only started doing it last few times out, and blanked with both rods, the 2nd one baited normally. so i cant say it doesnt work. I'm going to keep using it, as im sure it will when i find the fish. big grin

tried essexkenny's squid with macks and sardines wrapped in, at Cart Gap (happisburgh) at weekend. whay-hay.
6 whiting and 1 schooly bass. from 8 oz to 1.5 lb.
BUT probably missed / didnt hook 3 times as many bites. Maybe the bait was a bit big for em or maybe not presented right??
Also maybe I just hit on em at the right time??
Anyway my best catch as a newbie, so im pleased. Will keep trying it
