I find best time to dig is in the hour or so after low water point as most worms have made their casts (little pile of sand shaped like spaghetti) by then. Blow lug casts are "untidy", black lug casts are spiral shaped. Rag don't make casts but instead look for collections of small holes in the mud or their "nets". Nets are little tube like structures which stand up to 1 cm clear of the mud surface. Use a strong stainless steel fork or trenching spade to dig them out or a bait pump if there is enough water present. Warning: Most sandy spots are reasonably safe but if you are digging mud, don't get stuck in it - pattens are bits of plywood/whatever at least twice as large as your feet which you tie on with rope or cord to prevent your sinking into the mud.

When digging for lug on your local beaches eg. Bracklesham/Wittering area I normally dig on the outgoing tide when the wormcasts appear. As eccles says the lug live in a U shaped burrow between their cast and a small depression. I normally mark an area by scoring a line around a large cluster of casts and then start digging working backwards over the area. The blow lug on these beaches are normally at a depth of about 12 -18 inches. If you start your trench and then dig back at an angle of 45 degrees you can normally follow the worms burrow and when you spot the worm take a large spit out containing the worm.I do not know any black lug beds in the area.I know from experience digging on the North Wales beds that they are much deeper and harder to dig.
Ragworm are in the harbour area on the mud/gravel areas and are denoted by holes in the surface.
