Hi all

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to reading tide times and heights.
Am I right in thinking that the high tide peaks at 11.06 am and will be a height of 4.1 metres according to the info at this link

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tides/tides.shtml?date=20081010&loc=0221

if i am correct what would be the best time to go fishing?

These times and heights are for Eyemouth and will it be worth fishing these tides?

I am quite new to this and am not sure about the flood, the ebb and the term "slack water".

any help will be appreciated

Tide heights vary with locations e.g. In the Solent highest tides are around 5 metres but in the Bristol Channel/South Wales they can be more than twice that. You have to get to know happens in the localities that you fish but in general the higher or so called "spring" tides are more likely to see fish coming in shore, especially after dark because all sorts of little fishy morsels are likely to bcome available to them. The opposite of spring tides are so called "neap" tides where the water does not rise so high but also does not go so low. Actually I have had some good times at neap tides, not sure why but they do tend to give certain fish such as sole, longer to hunt for food.
All tidal movements produce currents which usually run along the shore in one direction or another and not always as you might expect. Slack water means that the tidal current has stopped flowing and nearly always results in a hault in fish activity, sometimes very abruptly. This is because with no current flowing, there are no scents flowing through the water which the fish can pick up and home into. I had a prime example of this when wreck fishing off the Devon coast about 15 years ago: We were all catching bass over a wreck almost every couple of minutes when suddenly all went quiet. "That's it" said the skipper, "Slack water boys, we'll have to move elsewhere" and so we did.

most of your area (eyemouth) seems to fish well last 3 hrs of the flood and 1st 3 hours of the ebb, also fishes best when the sea has calmed after a heavy sea, tide height dont seem to matter if you are fishing around the cannons, hairy ness, divers gulley areas, but the calmer the sea the better the results mate

i Fishunter, A flood tide is when the tide is coming in and ebb tide when its going out at the top and bottom of each tide you get what we call slack water when the tide is doing neither. when you get the earth sun and moon in a line is when we have spring tide ( the largest Tides ) and when you have the moon at right angles to earth and sun that creates a neep tide ( the smallest tides ), also in the southampton area we have what we call a double high tide where the tide comes in goes out a bit and then comes in again another point we have to remember is the addition of 1 hour for british summer time if the times are given at greenwich mean time. hope this has been some help for you...Tight Lines and Bendy Rods...Frank
