After failing to get my ragworm to fish oxwich for possible flounder, i decided any fishing would be better than none so went to the knab after digging some monster lug. Took some party squid to use s tipping bait too.
Set up about 8.15pm and decided to fish about 3 hours. A few were there as expected and saw a few small fish including what must have been a bass which would have weighed 4 ounces at best. Not good i thought. About 1.5 hours with just a nibble and i went into knab rock depression mode, but, low and behold, as i poured myself a coffee the inevitable happened. The rod went noddying and after fishing some seaweed i brought in a nice doggie. Blank threat over at least ! Sticking another 2 giant lug and 5 party squid which must have taken up 2 foot of the pennel pulley trace, i cast out and returned to the coffee, and a fag.
Didnt have time to have either in full as the rod went all noddy again. Same thing, fight over seaweed and another half decent doggie.
After this it went quiet and decided that i would bait up once more before quitting. Cast out, had a coffee in peace, and a fag, and had a chat with a few down from me. returned to see the rod leaning forward and backwards and thought i hit seaweed. Gave a pull and felt a bit of resistance. After a gruelling retrieve, i was amazed to see a codling about 2.5 -3lb in weight dangling ! RESULT !
Others who came running along swear it was heavier but until i get some scales i will stay conservative with my estimates.
I still think knab rock is a noddy mark ( lazy convenient mark) but it shows it can throw up a suprise now and again. |

Cheers guys. This weekend will be the wrong tides as the ideal time is exactly when the tide is full out. I am going out to fish friday evening and with the tide full out at 22:00 I will fish either oxwich bottom water or have another shot at aberavon. The rays will be leaving our shores soon and it may be one the last stabs at them before concentrating on the codling.
If anyone is up for it for friday night email me - ric.alex67nospam@gmail.com. Obviously leave the nospam bit out though.
( squeeky, im sure you can get a lift for a session if you cant get transport, I can come thru from gowerton easily.).
For aberavon, sandeel is the order of the day. £1.50 a pack at tacklesmart which is good eel and cheap too !
The week after i will be starting to concentrate on the cod fishing as the tides will be good for evenings. |
