Went to Budleigh last night, arriving just before dusk and fishing until about 11pm. Highlight of the evening was a nice tub gurnard which I'm looking forward to eating. This was on rag/ squid cocktail fished at about 150yds (close to the reefs visible from Google Earth I'm guessing). Otherwise lots and lots (and lots) of pouting on the same bait at most ranges, and only a few knocks on sandeel or bigger bits of squid. A tourist down from me brought over a pollack of about 1lb that he'd caught as he couldn't unhook it, and a guy next to me was catching quite a few garfish on a float about 30 yards out, so there is obviously a good range of species around at the mo. With the improvement in the weather I'm hoping that the mackerel put in a late reappearance in the next week or two. Strangely there were no dogfish- I fished briefly the night before and was utterly plagued by them and didn't catch any other species.
Oh, and I also lost a smallish fish on a Dexter wedge just before dusk- not sure if it was a mackerel or a small bass.
PS does anyone have any hints on avoiding the pouting at Budleigh? |

Me and my mate went fishing on wednesday night at Budleigh, it was dry but a little misty and the water was fairly clear. We arrived at about 7:30pm, high tide was at about 9:00pm. We parked in the top carpark, walked straight down over the beach and cast some silver feathers in and caught a few mackerel.
After about 20 mins we walked up the far left of the beach near the river mouth. we both had spinning rods and mackerel coloured wedges. Straight away we both caught a pollack each. We fished in tha spot for about an hour and a half, catching all the fish within the first 45 mins, and caught 7 pollack and a mackerel. the pollack were about average size. I changed my reel from mono to braid earlier that day and the difference was amazing! i could feel the bite the second it happened and was casting alot further than before! i'd reccomend braid any day.
I've only been fishing for a few months and that night was my best night so far.
All the best people
