Me and my brother set off for a session down at West Bay on Saturday evening. Not fished there for a few years. When we got down there we found that the harbour has been re-built. The new piers have rouined the fishing. When we used to fish there , there was plenty of space to fish from either pier. Now the piers are difficult to fish from because of large boulders intended as sea defences. There were fair few folks fishing there already and space looked to be rather lacking. We did'nt fancy our chances much and went to Lyme instead. Fished the cannon wall until early hours but had only an eel and a pouting to show for it. Managed to catch plenty of prawns in the net.

Very dissapointed at West Bay. We fished there many times back in the 80s and 90s and spent may happy hours on the left hand pier floating for mackerel. Used to get a few small rays on sandeel at this time of year too. Caught scad and gurnards also. It was a great spot for a bit of easy fishing.

We have done a fair amount of sea fishing this summer but it seems hard going now compared to what it was even only 10 years ago. The mackerel are tiny now. Even the ones in Sainsburys we would have thrown back at one time. Will be pike fishing for the rest of this year fron now on.

Sea fishing has had it mate, all trawled up. I have to smile sometimes when I see anglers say they had a good nights fishing catching a few pouting and tiny whiting.
Sad days.
